anyone know what is generally considered to be a viable count and viable motility is in a dog?

Sorry, can't help.
But I'm very interested in any answers, as I'm having the stud I'm using next month evaluated soon. We're taking him to a clinic specializing in dog fertility, as I'm not sure all vets would know what they're actually seeing.

Gil Simpson, Weimaraner breeder and Vet, is an expert in this field. Perhaps you could e-mail her and ask.

She's listed on the Champdogs main site under Sireva Weimaraners.

Amazing what you can find out if you want to.

I just wish DEFRA would come out of the dark ages and allow us to import fresh chilled semen.  This would make AI so much more of a practical possibility without the expense of travelling to mate a bitch and the cost and low success rate of using frozen.

I can't understand why you can bring in a dog and use him at stud, or take your bitch out and mate her yet you can't bring the same dogs semen into the country except deep frozen.

We have only had two successful litters 30 years apart in my breed using frozen semen and many thousands wasted on failed attempts.

You can now bring in chilled semen to be used as I know of someone who has done a few months ago. The KC will register the litter too.

Ooh have you got a link to the up to date rules as it was still impossible when I enquired towards the end of last year.

This could be so helpful and a route I would willingly go down.  I travelled 6000 mile round trip (four flights) to mate Lexi last year.

Wouldn't swear to it, but I believe you can import fresh semen as long as the dog you are importing from has a valid pet passport?

You would have to ring Gil Simpson the vet who deals with all this & her staff should be able to assist you. If you want her number, you can PM me. Or google Tweed Hopuse Vets.

Hi Sam,

The frozen semen I have just used on my girl from a "Swedish Gentleman" was around 65 to 70 percent motility I think. We used Angelika Von Heimendahl in Cambridge.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed everything goes OK :-) as this will be a new bloodline for the UK.
