I have a 13 wk old king charles cavalier puppy,Since we brought him home we have had trouble with him going to the toilet.He wa son dry food when we had him,But he had diarehhea for a couple of days,So we changed is food to bakers puppy food,But he wa stsill the same,The vet advised us to try him on chappie,hhe has been a lot better but his stools are still soft,and sometimes have a little blood and what looks like mucus in it,he is very lively and doesn't seem ill at all.He is allways looking for food but is feed 3 times a day.when he has his food he gulps it down so i don't think this is helping.Please if anyone has any advice it would be very much appreciated,because i am at my wits end.

Loose stools are very common when a puppy goes to a new home; the stresses involved for it are enormous, and the new environment, change of routine, lack of anything familiar, change of drinking water etc all go straight to the bowels! Unfortunately the worst thing to do on top of all this is to change the food because that only adds to the stresses and makes matters worse. :( If you're going to change the food from a poor diet to a better one (and Bakers isn't a great food to change to anyway) you need to take about two weeks doing the changeover, not all in one go.

What did the breeder feed the puppy? It might be better to change back to that (if it was a good diet) and feed him a little and often till his bowels have settled down again.

Oh dear poor little man. Didn't the breeder give you a supply of the food they were feeding him on ?

!3 week old Cavaliers should still be on 4 meals a day, breakfast, lunch, tea & supper

Changing his food is not a good idea & I always give puppies boiled cooled water for the first few weeks as some thing as simple as a change in water can cause problems

Do you give him milk ? Dogs don't need milk once they are weaned & milk can keep the diarrhoea going

Personally I would feed him small amounts of bland food steamed white fish or chicken breast & rice cooked in the fish/chicken water until it goes sticky until the stools are back to normal & then very gradually wean him on to a quality complete puppy food. Once the stools are normal you can give small amounts of natural live bio yoghurt to put the good flora back into his intestines

Just to back up what the others have said.

Pop him back on dry food, and as already said 4 small meals a day is what he should be on.

To help bind him some more, for one or two of those meals give him chicken and rice, minced meat and rice or white fish and rice all will help his tum settle.

Avoid tinned meats unless using a good mixer otherwise that will certianly give him the runs, and I agree about Bakers, food colourants are as bad for dogs as they are for us, some dog foods will certianly make him more hyperactive and much looser.

Pups always gulp their food down. ;-)

Also over feeding will cause loose stools, it is very easy to over estimate how much he needs.

When our dog had diarrhoea we fed him boiled chicken and rice for a few days then weaned him onto a good dried food. x

has he been wormed as a worm burden can make them have blood in their poo ?

i had the same with my new puppy four weeks ago did the same as put it chappie,made no different
it start after the 1st vacc upset tummy with blood then it got a bit better. a week later i then worm the pup it start again. on and off for 3 week some i got a stool sample took it to vet and she had an infection put on abc tablet for 7 day fine since

so if it still carries on have a poo sample done

Apparently there is a parasite called Giardia which some dogs have unnoticed... it isn't something which responds to the usual wormers and apparently it calls for a dose of Panacur. It can cause diarrhoea. Might be worth checking out.

Giardia needs to be treated with Panacur liquid for 5 consecutive days.  If I had blood and mucus in a dogs poo, I would suspect Giardia first.
