Topic Dog Boards / General / Waterproof material??
- By Star [gb] Date 15.10.07 08:59 UTC
I want to make some dog beds from duvets which I can cover with a waterproof fabric that can be wiped over, rather than in the wash everyday. Does anyone know what type of fabric I should be googling for. It needs to be 'sewable' so not too thick
Thanks
Sue

Hi Sue,

Only thing about waterproof material is I would imagine it being sweaty.

Have a look at www.kudospetproducts.co.uk.  Their beds are made from a strong (but soft) water resistant fabric.  The only problem is that the material is not stain resistant, so to clean it you need to either pressure wash or get the hosepipe and broom out.  Having said that they are as tough as old boots and have lasted years - just don't look the smartest in the world after the dogs have had their bones on them though.  Have had a look at the label on mine but can't see a name for the type of material - sorry.

Does the stains come off when you have washed them or power washed them.? They seem good but I would hate stained covers :-)

Someone help me here, I can't understand the need for water proof bedding :-) is it to save washing them??

I have waterproof bedding in the car boot where my dog travels.  If we have been to the beach she gets towel dried but it stops the car smelling if the bedding doesn't absorb smells.  If I didn't use waterproof I would be washing the bedding a couple of times a day rather than just giving it a shake each time and wiping it down weekly.

These types of beds are also meant to be good for allergic dogs as they are apparently impermeable to dust mites and fleas.

What breed do you have Blue? I'm guessing that it isn't a muddy, smelly, hairy gundog type that retrieves from water, bog and cesspit!!  Mine are constantly muddy and dirty every day - twice or three times a day.  Doesn't matter if the country is in the middle of a drought, the black b*st*rd can find a swamp a mile off!  :-)  And sods law says that every shot phezzie MUST land in a bog!!

There's a saying in my house though and that is 'a mucky pointer is a happy pointer!!'  Hence need for water resistant bedding!

:-)  :-)  err I think mine sound a little cleaner. They are diggers though :-)

Cordura might be what you're looking for, but it is difficult to sew so I would get a sample first to try.
