Gemmas kidneys are slowely failing, so she needs to drink extra water.
She seems to dehydrate often, shown by her left I going sunken. So I need to get mopre liquid into her.
I give her meat and biscuit totally submerged in water for dinner so get alot of water into her that way.
And am constantly changing the water (she doesnt like dirty water LOL)
Is there anything I can put in the water a few times aday to get her to drink more. Will of course leave the normal water down all the time :)
I dont want to use anything that will majorly exacserbate the kidneys faili8ng, but equally, now it is about making her life enjoyable for the last 6 momths so not worried about it rotting her teeth etc!!!

I put a little bit of milk into Piglet's water to make sure he drinks plenty.

She has a cast iron stomach, so it will probably be ok. How much do you put in???

Just enough to colour it - roughly the amount you'd put into a cup of tea in a pint or so of water.

Thankyou :)
Will try that away from the other 2 :)

Yep, agree completely, just a dash of milk will make my lot empty the water bowl and it's not enough to upset their tums :)

Same hear! :)   We add a splash of milk to our girls water to make them drink whilst we are at a show.

Woooooooooo Hoooooooooooooo
Thankyou :)
I have just put the other 2 out and half filled one of the water bowls with water and added a splash of milk. I was still standing there about 5 mins later while she polished it all off!!!!:eek::eek::eek:
I have never seen a dog drink for soooooooooooooo long.
So thats her morning drink and evening drink!!!!
Out of interest, I know you are meant to have water down al the time, but how many of you have it in the bedroom at night??
My dogs go to bed with me, and sleep the whole night, very rarely getting up. So I donnot have any water in the bedroom.
On average they are up there from about 11 - 7 later at weekends, but have water outside and in when I am up.

My dogs sleep downstairs but there are bowls of water in the kitchen (girls' dorm!!) and utility room (boys' dorm) all the time.

After that big drink (hurrah!) so late at night you might well find she needs to go out in a couple of hours' time ...

Yes, not planning to go to bed for another hour or so!!!! LOL
Will make sure I give it to her earlier in future, I didnt expect such an enthusiastic response!!!! LOL

Ours have always had water in a bowl in the bedroom at night too. The two we have now sleep in the kitchen so the bowls are there anyway but Dakko slept in the bedroom and had to have water at night. If you forgot to fill it he would chuck the metal bowl around the place til you got up and filled it   Had many a rude awakening!

I keep a water bowl on the landing.  Lola uses it very occasionally at night but as they have free run of the house while we are out (well, usually they do...stairgate is currently in use to keep one very determined invalid off the stairs  )  so they can get a drink upstairs without having to go up and down all the time.

My dogs all come to bed with us and I have a water bowl down on a plastic tray in case of spillage/dribbling. The tip about the milk is great and I use it if any of them get cystitis as I know I can get them to drink lots and flush the system out.

Good idea, must try to remember that

My dogs sleep in my room with me and I have a bowl of water down. I carry a huge glass of water with me wherever I go because I hate going without. I just project my own personal feelings about the stuff onto my dogs :) They rarely drink during the night but often do right before lights out and in the morning (we do tend to laze around in bed for 15-30 minutes).

thats the thing. when I go to bed I dont drink (unless I have had a heavy night!!!)
And when the dogs go to bed they curl up and sleep. and if I want a lay in and they get up before me, they go down stairs anbd the kids let them out.
Very occasionally they walk around in the middle of the night. If theyt do not settle after a few minutes then I ge up and take them downstairs (never Gemma unless she is really ill!)
So they donnot go without water. And the first thing I do in the morning is put fresh water in.
So dont think I am being cruel not having water in the bedroom.
