I met someone at the weekend who said she had a silver backed yorkie and she also said it didn't moult. Would this be different to a normal yorkie? I've done a search and can't really find anything. She didn't have the dog with her at the time so I didn't actually see it.

I've seen Yorkies where the hair in their backs is silvery rather than the steel blue it's meant to be. (I also know one that's still black and tan at age 12!) It doesn't seem to be unusual. And as they're a breed often recommended for asthma sufferers I don't think they moult much - after all, they're often clipped (look at the length of hair on the show Yorkies), and dogs which moult, don't need to be.

You also see them the size of Cairns, and drop eared also, or long as a dachshund.  These are all just poor untypical specimens.

Very true Barbara...some see mine in the Park and ask if they're the tea cup/miniature yorkies!!!  I say no, they're just properly bred ones!!!

Mind you I know some in the breed that don't even let their yorkies walk on the ground, never mind play or walk in the Park! Sometimes I wonder what the lesser of the two evils is!! I let mine do what they want to...always look a bit low on coat in the ring! But who cares at least they can be dogs and puppies rather than statues without any fun in their lives! I suppose there will always be those that say their dogs enjoy showing so much they don't miss out on fun?? All the best, Dawn

I met an Afgahn exhibitor whose son was in JH with my daughter.

Her dogs were allowed to be dogs all week, with Friday night being bath night and had to keep clean and tidy until Sunday night.

Maybe they lost the odd little bit of coat, but the judges shoudl not be faulting a dog for the lack of a few hairs.

Ah right, so maybe it's just not breed standard then? She gave me the impression it was something special, if you know what I mean?

Ermmm nope hun!!! They tend to look black and tan as pups 'cos their coat hasn't cleared at all...it can take upto 3 years for the colours to clear! If you look at my profile and the pics in photobucket you will see what they're supposed to look like!! Believe me they aren't 'special' at that colour!!! All the best, Dawn

Thank you, very nice of you to say so...I think so too!!! But then I would!!! As long as a dog is loved and cherished it doesn't really matter what they are 'supposed' to look like does it?? I've got fed up trying to educate people in the Park by saying...sorry, no such thing as different sized Yorkies according to the KC...they are all the same...they don't listen anyway!! hahaha
