Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bruised teats

Holly had had 12 pups a week ago so is spending a lot of time feeding! Her teats have gone very bruised, milk is white and there are no swellings so I dont think its mastitis, she just looks sore from constant sucking.  Is there anything I could/should do to make her feel better.  I have cut nails so she doesnt get scratched.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Well done on cutting the nails. :-)

I would keep an eye on her teats mastitis does flare up quite often, and it can get bad if untreated, if her teats look 'bruised' i.e purple? then just lay a heated flannel on them to help circulate and ease them a little, do keep checking them that there is no swelling, don't put anything on them other than a heated flannel, if it does turn to mastitis your vet will give you antibiotics, hopefully they will settle, just watch for cracks and swelling. :-)

she sounds normal to me, you would look bruised with 12 babes suckling! dont forget to cut the nails a least twice a week they grow really fast.

I did wonder if what the OP saw as bruising was actually the colour the teats go when being sickled with often an area around discoloured from saliva.

If the bitch seems to be feeding contentedly and does not look uncomfortable when pups are suckling then the teats are not being bruised.

Mastitis always needs watching out for and can literally flare up in a couple of hours to be quite serious (says she whose bitch got mastitis on boxing day).

Thanks, puts my mind at rest, she does seem fine in herself, Its just concerning to see black/blue/purple teats..I can imagine how it happens with all that sucking though.  I just want the best for my baby, after all its us that do this to them, least we can do is pamper them!!!
