Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy teeth not fell out yet
- By carolinexx Date 29.09.07 11:13 UTC
My 6 month old puppy has (I think) got all his adult teeth, but all 4 puppy canines haven't fallen out yet, they are not even loose! His adult canines have come in right next to the puppy canines. Is there still time for them to fall out or is it now time to get the vet to pull them for him?

I would give him a bone to chew on!! :D
My pup who is now 6 months old had a couple of baby teeth with adult teeth growing around them, so I have him a good juicy bone to chew on and hay presto they came out!! :D :)

I had the same with both my boys, especially the top canines. First time with Geordi I waited til he was 9 months and then had them pulled, which I think was too late as they had caused his adults to grow out of line a bit. With the second, Oscar, I waited until he was 8 months, I really thought they were there to stay - they weren't the slightest bit wobbly, then on the morning of a show we were going to, I noticed one was gone! Two days later the second one went without warning or wobbling! I agree with Gem, a good bone should sort them out! :) :)

This happened to two of mine and they both had to have them removed by the vet before the adult teeth became misaligned. No amount of bones or tuggy games were going to have any effect because the root hadn't reabsorbed as they should. If there's no sign of looseness at 6 months then I'd get them removed.

Thanks for that. I've tried bones and gentle tug games but they are not shifting! I will ring my vet on Monday and see what he suggests.

This may sound like a very silly question but how do you know if their teeth have fallen out?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 30.09.07 21:41 UTC
The silly answer is that you look in their mouths ... ;) ...  the deciduous teeth are small and very pointy and the adult teeth are larger and blunter.

Problem is i can't get to look in his mouth, this is something that he won't allow me to do!

Would i have seen teeth lying around if they had fallen out?

You definitely need to work on that Angels2, being able to open a dog's mouth can be very, very important for many reasons. Occasionally you may see a tooth on the floor, but more often not.

Having his mouth examined is something all dogs need to accept, so that's something you'll have to work on. If he cuts his mouth on something, how on earth is the vet meant to find out what's wrong?

And no, the shed teeth are usually swallowed.

We are definantly working on it but like grooming (which he also hated at first!) i think he will take some time to come around!

You can get in to see his mouth if you are prepared to be bitten (not a proper bite just a puppy one!)

If you see my other post you will see that he is a bit of a tinker rarely sitting still for more than a few seconds!!

Teach him to enjoy it by saying "teeth" then simply lifting his lip quickly, gently and without fuss. Then praise him and give him a titbit. Repeat at intervals during the day. At this stage you don't have to actually open his mouth at all, but he'll need to learn to accept you (and eventually strangers) handling him all over - looking at his teeth, looking in his ears, etc.

Had this happen with my latest pup and was quite surprised as usually the pup teeth have fallen out before the adult ones have fully come down!  Like you was very concerned.

He is 7 months now and by 6 1/2 months all the puppy teeth had gone!  Gave him plenty of bones and did wobble them a bit to try and encourage them to come loose!

When I mentioned to the vet nurse she was oh they should all be out now and if they don't come out soon then will need them removed surgically - but a friend who had been in the breed said it was quite common and not to panic.

Just thought i would say that we have been practising checking teeth and they are all there straight and pearly white....but how would i tell if they were his baby or adult teeth?

(they look very small, not sure if they are bigger or the same size as his baby ones as he is only little although they don't hurt as much when he is mouthing and don't seem to scratch us anymore either)

They are a different shape and will be closer together at the front and bigger.
