I am in dire need of some advice. Buffy my 2 1/2 yr old bitch has suddenly matured and started hating all other dogs so I have to pick and choose the times i walk her for minimum contact, today my timing wasn't so good and we met quite a few dogs all off leads i hasen to add i kept her on a short leash but what else can you do when despite shouting at the owner to keep their dog away buffy flew for this dog and my knee got in the way, now i'm not to bothered about me because i know i just got it the way she would never bite me on purpose but this is the second time in as many weeks she has wounded another dog all off their leads. Now unless i take her for walks at 5am or 12pm there is no way i can guarantee non contact with other dogs i live right next to the beach in the new forest so whever i go there are irresponsible dog owners. Is there any training tips you have to help this i don't want to muzzle her when walking but i fear i may have to just in case a small child gets in the way one day and judging by my knee(not puntured just bruised and swollen) it could be very nasty indeed. I know it's in a malamutes temperament to dislike other dogs but it's like she wants to kill every one we meet. The first time was a lab and i saw the hackles come up and shouted to the owner can you call your dog back but like alot of dogs off leads they are suddenly deaf and the lab kept coming buffy flew at this dog as it got to her and ripped it's lip the owner suddenly decided to take note and went to tend to his dog so i asked if she was ok and sorry although technically i don't really think it was my fault. Any sensible opinions gratefully received.

Hi Jacqui,
You are lucky to have got to 2 and half years :D Floyd decided he hated other dogs at around the 14 month mark. You are right it is a malamute thing. We exercise our dogs on a canac gentle leader which gives you good control of their heads. Ian can whip Floyds head right in very easily away from other loose dogs. He is an absolute swine but he has never managed to bite another dog, although its not stopped him from trying :D We don't exercise them off lead either. You cannot stop people from loosing their dogs and I wouldn't want to but like you I wish they would spare a thought for people who have to keep theirs on leads. This argument has been debated on here before but IMO the dog on the lead is the one under control. The loose dog who is deaf to his owners callings is not. Get yourself a canac leader and feel the difference.

A gentle leader headco;;ar in combination with a half check collar may be an alternative to a muzzle. It will give you more control of the end with teeth, and will limit the extent she can open her mouth. Is also good for breaking the eye contact.

Yes Barbara, I forgot to say that head collars are good for breaking that all important eye contact.

Hi thanks for the tips where can i get theese head collars? at the moment she has a harness that is supposed to stop pulling Ha!! obviously wasn't tested on malamutes, she also has a halti but i gave up on that after she ripped her gums with her claws trying to get it off
ignore that question have just found the canac leader it looks more friendly thean the halti so i'll give it a go.

When you put it on Jacqui, Clip the lead through the ring on the leader and also through the D ring on her collar. Otherwise you will find she can back out of it. I don't expect she will like it when you first put it on. Mine developed the habit of walking on their back legs while trying to get it off with their front.:D If the harness you have got goes across her chest you are giving her something to pull into and helping her to pull more. Glad you've found a leader, I was going to suggest pets at home. PS we use size L for both dogs and bitches. Good luck with it.:)

We also use a halti. Kiera will plod along happily on a normal collar and lead but pulls if she sees another dog. It has been great during my pregnancy...no pulling :)
If your dog tries to take it off with it's paws, hold a piece of chicken under its nose, it will soon look up and the habit will be broken quite quickly ;)
