Can anyone tell me what they have found to be the best wormer and flea treatments for dogs?
We use advantix spot on and drontal tablets, on our previous dog we used frontline but our vet is saying that advantix is much better??

I use Frontline spray (spot-ons have caused problems to my breed) when necessary and Drontal tablets every quarter.
Do you find the spray as effective as the spot on?
Is it a weaker version?

Is it as effective? There's no evidence that they fleas, so I suppose it must be. I find the advantage is that the dose is spread over the whole body rather than concentrated in one place, which is what's caused the problems in the past.
Thanks i will look into the sprays aswell

I also only use the spray and not the spot on plus Drontal plus.

They are better vbalue to.

In the few rare events when we have encountered fleas (perhaps 3 times in the past ten years) I found Frontline spray does NOT work, the fleas no longer die from it like they used to 15 years ago. The drops however work.

It is acutally more efective as it is more dilute but applied at a greater rate all over the body (so you don't get a reaction from applying a concentrated form in one spot and waiitng for ti to disperse on it's own). It can be effective for up to 3 months where the spot on says only two months at most.

Ditto ditto and ditto :-)
Use Drontal every 3 months and frontline spray also. Never had a problem. Did use Advocate once and a couple had minor reactions on the spot where it had been applied. Have used the method for years now and had no problems whatsoever.

I don't use any flea products on our dogs now unless they have fleas, which they never seem to have. They are wormed with Drontal.

Like you Lurcher girl I dont tend to use routien flea treatments any more but just keep an eye out and treat with spray if we have a problem. Ticks are my main problem but we check most days and remove any we find ASAP. The girls are however wormed every 3 months with Mobidex.
Thing is i am a bit of a clean freak

so i have to routinely treat him as the thought of fleas makes me feel ill!

I used to Frontline a couple of times a year and Drontal Plus six-monthly. I stopped the Frontline some years ago as I was giving the dogs garlic, but have used it a few times this year as we have had a big tick problem this year :( I'm really not sure what to do now, as Bramble seems to react badly to ticks - he gets big scabby lumps which take months to go :( They have never had fleas. If Frontline only works for a month for ticks, it doesn't seem worth using it just for that. I haven't wormed them since last December and am considering stopping that too - they don't scrounge. Decisions, decisions :) :) :)

I would be cautious about not worming as I think most dogs sniff other dogs poo's and they can pick up worms that way. Think of how you would feel if your dogs infected a child! I do believe worming is the one thing we should all keep on top of all the time. How do others think?
Mind you I think some education should be aimed at cat owners as well, after all they use other folks gardens and many moggie owners never worm (present company excepted I'm sure?)

Yes - I know :( They have been wormed six-monthly regularly - the pills I was due to give them in the summer were out of date (friend persuaded me to bulk buy when she went to Crufts :( ) so I threw them away and haven't got around to getting more - but I know that I should :(

Maxine
Milbemax isn't suitable for herding breeds & my vet will not perscribe it for any hearding breeds not just collies. just a heads up
