Ok everyone here is the problem.
My mums dog is in heat and has been in for 3weeks now, Since yesterday her male has started going crazy trying to mate with her and she is allowing him to do the sniffing and licking, But as soon as he mounts she swings round and grabs his leg.
She will stand for him to do the other stuff but mounting is a big no.
She is still heavily swollen and only has small amount of blood and thats only after she has been lay down.
My mum who has bred dogs years ago has never had a dog like this and is wondering if anyone on here can shed some light since i have told her how great these forums are.
Her bitch has started eating like she is starved since she come in heat and now she eating more she seems to be constantly hungry, Also all she wants to do is sleep or be cuddled and fussed over all the time.
She is happy in herself and still plays and toy fights.
I am wondering if maybe he has caught her when my mum been out or wether she is just not ready yet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have these two dogs been left together unattended throughout this season for a mating to have taken place prior? If so then there is no way of knowing.
Dog and bitch really should be kept seperate and brought together under supervision to assess (if not using any medical help) when the bitch is ready for mating.
IME if a male dog has been showing the usual interest i.e sniffing, flirting, licking and then should suddenly become quite frantic it is because the female is at her peak and he knows there is only a short space of time to mate, so he will become very excitable and stop at nothing to get to the bitch.
However, the bitch should also be flirting, standing and ready for mounting, if she is not being receptive that is usually a sign that she is not ready or that her time has passed.
I have not personally known a bitch start to eat more directly after mating so would not think this a sign at all of a previously un-noticed mating, however all bitches are different, and do act in different ways as do some studs.
Unfortunately unless everything is supervised and carefully watched, there is no way of knowing whether a dog or bitch have mated, are receptive, or having problems.
Also is the bitch a maiden? She sounds like she may be, wanting cuddles etc many maidens are just not sure of what is happening, which also may be why she is rejecting him, she may just need to be held in place.
Perhaps a little more detail of how things have been carried out throughout the 3 weeks may help some of us to give some more advice. :-)
Hi thanks for the quick reply.
She has been pregnant before but lost the pregnancy in her 4th week of pregnancy, Vet seems to think due to the stress and anxiety of going to the vets for a check up as she gets stressed when she needs to go.
He done tests and there was no bacterial or viral reason for her to lose the litter.
The first sign that she was in heat was about the 1st september when my mum noticed she was starting to swell up and her male kept licking hut would then go and lay down and leave her alone.
SInce then he has not really bothered with her they sleep, eat, drink and play together and do not like being seperated.
She has always been a very fussy eater only eating small amounts throughout the day, but since she has come in heat she does nothing but eat, She is drinking the same amount as always and is otherwise normal.
Its only since yesterday he has tried mounting her and like i say she will lift her vulva and allow him to do the sniffing and licking and he can mount but as soon as he starts thrusting she tells him off and walks away.
Today was the worst he nearlybroke the backdoor down to get into her and when he did come in started getting really excited and kept whining to get to her...
When she is not allowed around him she lays around looking miserable and depressed, If my mum puts him in the yard she will scratch and scratch at the door to be let out aswell.
They are always together only time they are left alone is if my mum goes shopping or comes to visit me, She would bring her dogs along with her when she comes to mine but my dogs can not stand them and a fight breaks out so we decided that it was a good idea not to bring them.
She has always been a loving dog always wanting cuddles but this is getting worse she tries to get on your lap.
Both dogs have had all the checks done hip, eyes ect upto date on worming and vaccinations.

Well, the male certainly seems to know the time is right and I would go with his instincts, is he the same male she was mated with previously?
Personally, whether the two are miserable apart or not, if I were leaving the house I would certainly pop them in seperate rooms, not just for the fact of missing a mating and not knowing dates etc, but for the safety of both dogs if a mating were to happen and the bitches vulva were to get torn by an awkward dismount etc, or the male should be hurt by a bitch moving badly, I would advise your mum to keep them seperate when not able to supervise.
Her bitch may quite simply be afraid or badly affected from loosing her previous pups she sounds as though she needs a lot of re-assurance it may take him a few goes before she is ready to accept, but if this is a medium to large breed your mum really should also have another helper there to help steady both dogs and if her bitch is nervous to talk calmly to her whilst being mounted.
If she is in her prime as the male dog seems to suggest then she should eventually take his advances especially with them being together a lot.
Has your mum checked her vulva to see that she is not hurt in any way from an un-noticed mounting as that would certainly make her withstand his advances?
Apart from that if all medical checks are fine, if the bitch is in tip top condition, then animals have a way of sensing things we don't it may quite simply be that she is rejecting him for some reason, or she has a reason herself for not wishing to be mated.
But personally I think she will be receptive to him within the next 24 hours. :-)
That is unless your mum's male has completely got it wrong and the time is well and truly passed, 3 weeks is quite late for the eggs to be at their prime though some matings have taken place so late on.
Actually just noticed your date from 1st September so this will be her prime time, just keep popping them together supervised :-)
Yeah he is the same male that mated with her before, Mum has checked her vulva and all is fine, She said when she drips little spots of blood its not very pale its still slightly red.
She eggs him on until he mounts then she don't want to know. She still has a very swollen vulva. She only passes blood when she has been lay down and then gets up.
The last time she fell pregnant mum had them locked in sperate rooms as she was going to a wedding and my brother was supposed to check on them, But he forgot to close the doors and thats how that pregnancy happened.
But this one is planned but it don't seem to be going right, Think her dogs like there privacy haha.
Also she has tried mounting him a couple times which she has never done before..
Thanks for the quick replies
If your male began getting frantic yesterday then there is usually a window of approx 2-3 days for mating with the success of pups, personally I would seperate and bring back together throughout the day as this will also make the bitch more 'hungry' to mate if he is not on tap so to speak all the time.
Try them on and off tonight and then seperate when your mum goes to bed and bring them together first thing in the morning. If her bitch has not accepted him on her own personally I would then hold the bitch to allow the mating as time is running out. :-)
[Also she has tried mounting him a couple times which she has never done before..
/i]
Just seen this, this is normal it shows she is receptive also and flirting back, nature should take it's own course soon.
My mum said thanks for the help, She will try everything you suggested and see what happens.
Thanks again
Just an update, My mum kept them seprated all night, and this morning, But when she let them together her bitch done the same again tried to bite him.
She has seperated them again as my mum does not want her hurting him and now her bitch is just sleeping under the stairs where she always sleeps and has only eaten a little today unlike the past couple of weeks where she has eaten like she never been fed before.
My mum says she looks really sad and keeps following her around like a lost lamb wanting to be cuddled and fussed over.
I am now starting to think he may have already caught her without my mum knowing and thats why she is acting the way she is, Too me she looks like she did when she was pregnant last time but my mum says she is alot more quiet and loving than last time..
I will keep you posted of how she is getting on.
Perhaps this is a factor, if she has already been mated???? It would be considered quite cruel to have a male dog keep trying to mate with her two tie's is plenty enough, this may be why she is biting him, I guess we shall not know until she shows or a scan is done.
Best lesson to learn is to always be watchful and not leave them alone when she is in season then everyone knows where they are and what is happening. ;-)
Well she still wont allow him to mount. She is still being flirty but thats as far as it goes.
So mum has kept them apart and her bitch has gone miserable giving the puppy eyed look.
He is very much eager but i am guessing if he mated with her once that is why he so eager now, and she is not.
Her vulva is still swollen i have checked today and it looks fine to me no tears or rips, She has the odd drip of blood now and again so i would say she is coming to the end of her cycle.
When i had a dog in heat once she was mated she would usually come out of heat within 48hours and everything started to go back to normal.
Thanks for the replies they are greatly appreciated
Well i am looking after my mums dog at my house and she has took it upon herself to chase my poor female around trying to hump her.
She keeps shoving her vulva in my girls face aswell, Even a friend came today and Jess decided to turn her bottom to him and stuck her vulva in the air haha.
What is going on with her, She is still swollen but not as big and she has a peachy pink coloured discharge but only if you wipe her vulva....
She is still not interested in my mums male but she will gladly push it in the face of my girl..
Well Jess has no bleeding or discharge, but her vulva still slightly swollen its not gone back to its pre heat state just a little bigger than it was before her heat. Her nipples are pointing but no other changes.
Since her heat started she has eaten like she never been fed before but today she has had a mouthful of food this morning and did not want anymore until around 11am she then ate her afternoon feed at 3pm
So my guess is she is probably pregnant, I have had a dog before that would let the male mate once and then never again and she went on to have a littler of 9pups.
So whats your views do you think she is pregnant or could it be she just did not want him. First signs of her heat was when noticed small spots of blood on the 1st of september.
I have never owned a dog that would allow a male to mount her until day 15 of her heat, With jess from around the 17th september my mums male got really excited and tried to mate with her but she would not allow him.. But on the 15th september my mum came to mine as it was my little brothers birthday and the dogs were left together.
She has bled all the way through, Also the past 2 days she looks like she has lost some weight even though she been eating the same.
She did keep thrusting her vulva in my females face as i have jess staying with me for 2 weeks while my mum is on holiday, Yet she showed no interest in diesel..
Thanks for any help
I had to add this here...
Well i am looking after my mums dog while she is on holiday.
She started her heat on the 1st sept well thats when noticed the odd drop of blood, She was left alone with my mums other dog on the 14th and 15th sept while my mum was out shopping.
From the 17th her male got really excited and tried mounting her and she would attack him, This carried on for a couple of days, Mum seperated them and kept trying to put them together but she still attacked him everytime he tried to mount. She is not a maiden bitch and has been pregnant before but lost her litter early into the pregnancy unkown reason as had all health tests done and was checked for virus or bacterial reason behind the reabsorption but all was clear. She carried on bleeding until the 20th sep, Her vulva looks like it still slightly up.
She normally has 1 tin of food at 9am another at 4pm and then her complete food around 8pm,She has eaten like a horse since about a week before her heat started The past couple of days she has not eaten her morning feed until around 10am, Today she has only eaten 1 tin and does not want her afternoon feed she just walks away from it.
She is acting normal there is no discharge from her vulva, Is still playing and drinking as normal just her appetite gone funny.
She will eat treats or chicken but does not want her food.
My dogs never went off there food and even ate a hearty meal before delivery.
Her nipples are pointing out but other than that and her vulva being slightly flushed she has no other signs.
I don't want her to have a scan as i think thats why she reabsorped the last litter due to stress of going as she has never liked the vets.
Just to add the male was the sire of her last pregnancy so he is not a maiden male.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Hi,my girl was mated on the 6th and is off her food too .She won`t eat her dried food willingly but as i`ve been through this with her before I know she`ll eat if I hand feed her slowly ,only soft food though. She did this when she was pregnant last time .Doggy morning sickness. I am having her scanned this wednesday by a sheep scanner at least i`ll know for sure.
Your mum`s dogs could have mated or she may just think she is .

My bitch whose 60 days today hasn't eaten any dry food since I brought her home from the stud dog. Actually it's been very difficult finding what to feed her during the pregnancy. Finally we found that what she will eat everytime and at last she is eating normally again. Actually yesterday she ate about 3 times her normal ration.
I spoke to a breeder friend about this and she told me that this is very common as dogs suffer morning sickness just like humans. Actually my bitch also won't eat until about 10 in the morning. She just can't face eating when she gets up in the morning.

Too early to tell, and having had a litter before the nipples re no guide at all. Only time will tell if you don't want her palpated or scanned by the Vet.
since you never saw them mate and that i gather she wasn't receptive to the male i would guess not, but you never know and time will tell good luck
She was fine with him before the 17th never growled at him or anything, But after that he could do the normal licking and sniffing but once he mounted that was it.
Last time she was in whelp no1 knew they had even mated.
She never went on to have the litter as i think she was 4-5 weeks into her pregnancy when she reabsorbed them.
She has always been a clingy dog but the way she is at the moment is abit overkill as all she wants is to sit on your knee or be cuddled.
She did finally eat her food tonight and all she does is sleep then play then sleep, She is usually very energetic and wants to play all the time but the past 4-5 days she been different.
Like i say her vulva is still a little swollen its not the usuall pre heat size so i guess its just wait and see.
Also she has taken to mounting my bitch every chance she gets and my dog just lays down and then jess will stop, She is also always cleaning my dogs heads and ears which doesnt mind at all.
thanks for all the help
Well she had a little opaque coloured discharge this morning, but nothing since, its not smelly either.
She has been picky with her food today But has happily lay and chewed on her bone and eaten treats but when it comes to her food she looks at it as if to say yuk i cant face that.
