Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How long is normal for Stage1 labour? (locked)

How long does stage 1 of labour usually last? Is up to 48 hours to long before you should get the dog checked out?  Seems like a long time!!
Holly is on day 62 from the first mating and start nesting and bit of panting around 9 last night, this carried on through the night and she seemed restless.  She has ate half her breakfast this morning and continued nesting and panting.

Hi Amy,

This is completely normal behaviour, you will find that when she is really getting on in labour she will have no interest in food at all, although saying that a few bitches will eat, none of mine have. One of my bitches nest, pants etc for 48 hours prior to actually whelping. Be prepared for a sleepless night soon:cool:

Hi Amy,

Molly panted for 27 hours solidly before moving onto the contraction stage........didn't know you popped in here :D

Just thought I'd update Holly gave birth to 12 pups starting at 20.10 on the 28th and finished at 04.58 on 29th! It was a tiring night! Mum and babies doing fine!

Brilliant news, well done to you all, try to get as much rest when mum does as sleep depravation soon catches up with you.
