If we were to move to spain, what would we need to do to take our little boy with us?
- By Moonmaiden Date 25.09.07 15:31 UTC Edited 25.09.07 15:35 UTC
Basically you need a Pet Travel Scheme passport, this contains all the information that is required to import a dog to Spain Your dog will need to be rabies vaccinated & it's worth getting the titre test done then you can keep up the rabies vax in Spain so that you could come back to the UK if you needed for any reason

Now that has changed in the last 2 1/2 years as previously pups under 12 weeks could be taken unvaccinated, and if vaccinated couldn't go for a moth.  Now there is no mention of having to wait a month before travel once Rabies vaccinated.

Do you know where I can find the current rules for France and Holand?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.09.07 15:54 UTC
The French Embassy site says that "pets who are under three months old and not vaccinated against rabies are not allowed to enter into France".
- By Moonmaiden Date 25.09.07 15:56 UTC
Here for France

Here for the Netherlands

You can still take puppies under 13 weeks to the Netherlands

Both sites are the countries government sites
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.09.07 15:57 UTC
That means that the people from Holland will either ahve to go the harwish route to take the pup home or will need to wait until pup has had RAbies vacciantion and then another 3 weeks making pup 15 weeks old.

Depending on Belgian rules they coudl of course go via Belgium.... off to Google.

Belgian & Dutch Regulations are almost identical I think, as they have not added extra clauses for dogs from the UK

North Sea Ferries from Hull are part of the PETS scheme & ferries go to both the Netherlands & Belgium & their kennels are air conditioned(on the Rotterdam route)& you can visit the dog on route.

Well as I am Bristol chances are they will do Dover to Belgium or dot the longer Hatrwish to Hook, but I think the Belgian route will be shorter time wise.

I told them today and they didn't realise the French were funny about a young pup coming through.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.09.07 16:02 UTC
Come on where are you finding them MM I need Belgium.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.09.07 16:31 UTC
Belgian information.

"Animals less than three months old coming from certain rabies-free EU countries are allowed into Belgium without their rabies vaccination provided that they have a declaration to say that they have lived in the same place since their birth and have not been in contact with any animals suspected of being infected with rabies."
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.09.07 16:37 UTC
Bingo that means they can take pup home through Belgium shorter ferry journey.

Its only an idea at this stage and we would need to look into it alot further but thanks.

I am taking 3 pups to Holland in a couple weeks. I am travelling Hull- Rotterdam and this is what I need. Pups microchipped, and a certificate from vet saying pups have been with mother since birth and hence havnt been in contact with rabies. For Export pedigree, need vet check on the males to see that testicles have descended. Is £15 per pup for ferry where they stay in kennels, air conditioned and very well looked after from what I gather. My pups will have had first vaccinations that all my pups have (although not necessary)

Hint, i went to Dutch Embassy website, and printed off the requirements, in case I get any hassle at ports.

Hope this helps

Just out of interest how can a vet verify the pups have definately been with the mother since birth unless they have been with them all the time since they have been born ? :)
- By Angels2 Date 26.09.07 07:46 UTC
Well our boy has been with several people since he was born!!!

We may have an oppportunity to live in spain but whether we accept would depend solely on how we can get our boy over there as i wouldn't go if he had to be in quarrantine etc
- By Moonmaiden Date 26.09.07 07:50 UTC
The Vet's certificate re only being with the breeder since birth only applies to puppies under 13 weeks
- By Brainless [gb] Date 26.09.07 19:29 UTC
It is not having been anywhere where they coudl ahve been in contact with Rabies, so that is anywhere in then UK.  That rule is for movement anywhere in the EU, including countries where there is soem residual Rabies risk.

Just curious, whats to stop someone going to Belgium on the ferry then driving into France? I don't think they have border controls.
- By ebonydawn [gb] Date 26.09.07 16:18 UTC
Reply to LJS. This was a question that bothered me too also when I was trying to find out requirements. DEFRA were useless and just kept telling me i needed a pet passport, when vet's receptionist was telling me they wouldnt give a passport without the rabies jabs. She also told me that the jabs wouldnt be done until 11 weeks so I was arghhhhh! I made her note down on the mothers notes the exact date she had the litter, and Ive now been given assurance by by vet that if everything is well with he pups, he will give me a certificate. He knows us well, knows our dogs and knows the pups wont have been anywhere else

The Vet's receptionist is totally wrong, all the Pet Passport is is a validated ID & the record of any vax/flea tick treatment &vet examination, any dog can have one-the difference being they cannot travel over a certain age without a rabies jab & cannot return to the UK without a positive rabies titre test at least 6 months before the return(within the period of the rabies vax)& tick & flea treatment. All the pages have to have an official stamp that have the dogs details & treatment/vax  info

Thanks Moonmaiden, thats a great help. My vets have 2 receptionists, the morning one is lovely and very helpful, the afternoon one is a misery guts. I managed to get her when I was in there enquiring about the info. If I get a passport even better. Its a nightmare doing his for the first time, thanks goodness they arnt going any further!! At least the Vet himself is the 'main man' Im going to see, he regulary does Eqine passports so should be up on he rules.

thanks

Yep I have had a number of pups not vaccinated with Rabies who were issued their Pet Passports.  the Vets do tend to hang on to them until after the titre tests for pups that are going to have these done (staying here).
