To cut a very long story short....

As many of you know, my boy Shay has had a pretty rough year following knee surgery last November.  He has severe arthritis which we thougt was brought on by injury as he is only 3 and a half.  He has regular check ups at the vets and I took him for his most recent check on Saturday past.  As I git him out of the car, he went toatally lame on his 'good' back leg so I asked the vet to take a look.  Vet wasn't happy and insisted that he come in for x-rays on Monday morning...one slight hiccup being that OH nad I were due on a flight to Turkey at 7.10am on Monday but that's another story.

Upshot of the x-rays is that the 'good' leg is now not good at all and immediate surgery was recommended which we agreed to.  Shay had his op yesterday and is 'doing the best' in the words of the vet this morning although it'll be several days before we have him home.

Please can I ask for some of those legendary positive CD vibes for my darling boy??  He's such a star and really doesn't deserve to be going through all this again.

Thanks.

So sorry to hear this, sorry to sound ignorant but what has been the problem with his knees/legs?
I understand how you are feeling as my last dog had patella problems and had a few ops from the age of 2 and when you have a young energetic dog it is very difficult for them and for you  to go through this :(

Sending lots of positive thoughts your way xx

So sorry to hear this, sorry to sound ignorant but what has been the problem with his knees/legs?

Severe arthritis in the knees, basically. Left knee was diagnosed last November.  At that time there was no sign of any problem with the right leg and the x-rays were clear but now has developed to quite an advanced stage.

Thanks for your good wishes everyone...I'll keep you posted on his progress.

He didn't come home yesterday after all although Vet is happy with his progress.  Only reason he was reluctant to send him home is because Vet knows only too well what Lola is like (I think it may have been one of the nurses that first christened her 'Hurricane' Lola ) so thought that a couple more days of peaceful cage rest would be to Shay's advantage.  All being well. he will be home tomorrow :)

No real idea what the prognosis is yet as our vet is notoriously cautious about offering prognosis; especially at such an early stage in the recovery process.  We'll know more in the next few weeks hopefully.

Sorry Ive only just caught this.. so sorry to hear Shays been in the wars :(
But relieved all seems to be going well so far, and he's had great care @ vets :)
I'll keep everyhting crossed this end for the long term for Shay, and when things get on an even keel you can go cheer yourself up becuase Bill Bailey has a new tour!!! (whoop!! but remember Im *just* lending him to you..he's mine!!!!)
:D ((Hugs))

(p.s thanks for the card..it meant alot, and definately helped at a difficult time x)

Quick update..

We finally brought Shay home yesterday evening :)  He had to stay an extra day due to a build up of fluid on the knee which needed to be drained.  Apparently normal following this type of surgery and nothing to worry about.

The knee looks much worse than when he had the other one done....much bigger incision (loads of staples ), very swollen :(  However, he is pretty mobile and can get out and about for short walks.  He has been enjoying lying out in the back garden in the fresh air which must be heaven to him after a week cooped up in a cage at the vets (we have a couple of outdoor beds so he doesn't lie on the cold concrete).  He usually sleeps on the bed in the spare room but as stairs are off limits; we have put a double mattress in the living room for him and he seems more than happy with this arrangement :)

He's back at the vet in the morning for a check and to have more fluid drained off but, fingers crossed, he is on the road to recovery :)

p.s. HG...any more info on that Bill Bailey tour??

Oh poor Shay. Glad he's home. I hope he recovers quickly. Some CD special recipe sausage frittata stuffed in a kong sounds like just what he needs to help wile away the hours.

Bill Bailey tour, I have my tickets already :-D
