Topic Dog Boards / General / Molly's going to be spayed.....
- By akh0706 [gb] Date 17.09.07 15:44 UTC
A week on Friday Molly is going to be spayed. I do think it's best for her but I'm worried about leaving her at the vets.
Not so much the operation, although it's making my tummy turn, but the fact that at the vets she quakes all over even when I'm with her. The thought of leaving Molly on the Friday morning on her own worries me. I hate the thought that she will be so scared. I'll be droping her off at 7am & I can't phone until 2.30. What a long day for me!

Has anyone had these feelings about leaving their dogs or am I being a worried Mum?

Don't worry, we've all been there. I'm sure she will be in safe, caring hands :)

Can you not ask to have her pre-med before you leave then she will be sleepy and not worry so much when you leave? I am lucky that my vet lets me watch her operate and I am there while they go to sleep and when they wake. At the very least I wait in the wating room then keep them company when they wake up.(Not that we have many GA's but hips/elbows the odd c section and funny lumps and bumps seem to have added up to lots of GA's over the years!!) But I am sure they could pre-med her and then you could leave when she is dozy.
Good luck, I am sure all will be fine and this time next week it will all be over.

I'll ask about the pre-med, that'll make both of us less stressed. Lovely idea, thanks.

Please ask about the pre-med being given while you wait with her to go all sleepy! I had a Bernese that had seperation anxiety and my Vet was very good about me staying with her till the pre-med had taken effect!!! All the best, she'll be fine and so will you! love Dawn x

Same here. My Dobe has had a GA 3 times over the last year for various reasons - he's a big mummy's boy :D so they let me stay each time until the pre-med's taken effect (mostly comparable to a sack of potatos on my lap!)

Most Vets have all the spays and castrations in first thing, but they may not be operated on for hours, so I would ask for a specific time that she will be done and arrange to have her premed at the appropriate time while you are there as she gets particularly stressed at the Vets.

You're being a normal Mum. :)

Of course we all worry about our dogs when they are packed off to the Vet for something we can't stay for. We like to be in control of the situation. It's trumatic, but I'm sure she'll be fine, you will both be glad when she's home though.

And don't worry, the veterinary nurses will be very kind to her they know many animals are afraid of the vets.

My little trick over the years when an animal of mine is going to the vets for an operation is to make a fuss, stroke, say bye bye happily but never to make eye contact as they are being lead away as most animals look back at their owner.

I did that once with all things a female cat about to be neutered, I looked her in the eye and she was a real clingy mummy's girl cat and that look of why aren't you coming too, made me cry all day. :-D

Thank you everyone for your supoort! I have to take Molly in between 7 & 10am. Because I start work early I'll have to take her in at 7. I'm wondering if they'd give her a pre-mid so early, if the ops start later on. I'll pop in after work & have a chat with the vet.

Don't worry, everyone feels like that. And of course the dogs pick up on our nerves which makes them even more nervous themselves. We find that usually when 'mum' goes and they're left with the confident, relaxed vets and staff they become much more relaxed themselves. :)

I popped into the vets today & saw the nurse, I feel better about leaving Molly there now. She explained they had already discussed Mollys pen for her size & seeing that she is the largest dog to be spayed that day she will be first. The nurse said it's best for Molly to go in early when the surgery is quiet & gives her time to get used to her pen. so after her op she will be familular going back in there. Molly will be under for GA for only 1/2 hr. The nurse did mention that the more timid of dogs are usually fine when their Mums leave the surgery!
So although still having butterflies I feel so much better now. Op next Friday...roll on 2.30 Friday afternoon when I can take Molly home!
