Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / naturediet not agreeing - need good palitable complete
- By luvhandles Date 16.09.07 12:13 UTC
I posted last week regarding mucus covered poo. I have been feeding my two Cavs 1/2 pack naturediet with a handful of Laughing dog mixer per day split into two meals - nothing else and they are still having the mucus covered poo and bringing up disgusting smelling yellow bile every morning. They are fine in themselves and enjoying the food but it doesn't seem to be agreeing with them. Can anyone suggest a decent alternative - wet or dry, I will try anything - cost isn't an issue?

Thanks in advance

That horrid mucus-covered poo is a sign of colitis - an irritated bowel. The usual treatment is to feed the dog very bland, easily digested food such as thoroughly over-boiled rice or mashed potato with either white fish or chicken (provided the dog's not sensitive to those!). Tinned Chappie is also a good standby food for sensitive tums. A week or so on that sort of diet should see improvements. Hope you sort it out soon!

you need to go to the vets and buy a tube on pro - kolin + and a i/d food a wet food to settle down the gut

You can buy prokolin without a prescription. I buy mines here, my dogs hardly ever have upset tums but I like to always keep a tube in the fridge just in case :)

Before I changed to raw, Charlie, my golden oldie, was having the same problem with ND, which he had been fed on for ages. Every now and again the others would too. Would raw be an option? Since the raw change, well over a year now, mine have rarely had upset tums and Charlie is now mucus-free.

I'm definately putting this down to Naturediet as one day they are fine and the next we're back to mucus - never had this problem with Arden Grange but then Harvey went off it hence changing to Naturediet :(  I'm going to be perfectly honest - I wouldn't know were to begin with raw:eek:

Was Harveys lack of appetite a real problem?  As in was he too thin, or just thinner than you would like.  If the latter then I would go back to the AG, and try him on the prestige if his appetite is poor.  I found the prestige was the one my anorexic bitch would eat enough of to keep from looking like a toast rack.  Now at 10 years old I have to watch her weight :D

A;sp AG do three varieties in the adult (chicken, Lamb and Salmon), so maybe just ringng the changes may keep him happy.

The yellow bile is more likely to be because their stomachs are empty, rather than being caused by the ND. The issue has come up a fair few times on the board, if you do a search. Nearly always remedied by giving a snack last thing at night, or holding back some of their dinner to give to them before bed.

They do always get one Winalot shape biscuit at bed time

Try ND Lite as this is specifically for sensitives tummies. Min one of my oldies had collitis and nothing we ever tried worked until this. BUT you must eliminate anything else for their diets so winalot biscuits are a no no ;) Try substituting with carrots or apples.

Hope you get things sorted

Hi Lucy,
They've always had the winalot shapes - about the only biscuit that doesn't upset them

Hi

If they have colitis then these will be maybe contributiong towards this episode. the only way you can be sure is to eliminate to see if they get better.

Oh, I see what you mean now Lucy  - Please ignore me....I turned the car off at the ignition today and took my seat belt off ready to get out when I was sat at traffic lights:eek: I'm not the brightest button at the moment - don't know whats wrong with me!

Well, I went out yesterday and bought a six pack of Chappie - fed this and just a biscuit at bedtime and they've been absolutely fine - poo's that I could build a wall with  ;)  :D  I think once over this, I am going to go back and try feeding the Arden Grange with just a spoonful of natures menu light - hopefully it was just a phase with Harvey not eating it - they were fine on those foods.

good luck!

Not sure i will try the wet diet as our boy is more than happy eating his dry food but i'm sure once he gets a taste for the wet stuff he may think twice about eating the complete!
