Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / reducing barking

We are all for getting our second dog soon. most of us are telling OH that this will help reduce 'Our Jacks'  barking!
He reckons the USA idea of voice box removal would be an easier option.
Comments please..............

Why would it reduce it? You might just end up with a duet

I don't think the 2nd dog will reduce the 1st dogs barking I'm afraid, in my experience the later dogs just copy the exsisting ones so you'll have double the barking :D Probably best to try and control Jacks barking before the new addition if you can?

Can second that - most definitely :D :D :D Getting one dog to stop is one thing, but two .......... As soon as one stops, the other starts and so it continues ....... :D :D :D

Debarking isn't legal over here, so forget that idea.

I taught mine to bark on command - and be quiet on command ;)  I also taught them a whisper bark - kind of a muffled wmmf! :D :D  They aren't perfect and will still bark at cats in the garden (well one does, the other just makes a bit of noise to join in and looks a bit puzzled :) ) They will both also give the alarm when needed ie. strangers around the back lanes, or at the front door :)

If you don't get this sorted before the new pup arrives, then it will learn from the older dog, and then they'll egg each other on too :(

I've got a 'barker' and I mean a serious one- I tried the teach her to speak first so I could teach her to be quiet etc- nothing worked.  I bought some spray from PAH called the 'Pet Corrector' it was about £10- but I can honestly say it works a treat- I only had to use it for a couple of days then she got the message, it just sprays out fresh air and obviously it's not to be pointed at the dog but she hates thte sound of it :-D  For the sake of £10- if he's half as bad as she was, I'd try it :-)

Just to add- I never sprayed it when she was barking because people were here etc :-)

My Papillon used to bark a little bit when people arrived to the house, like the postman. Then I got the second Papillon, and she taught the first to bark a LOT when anyone arrives, so it's now MORE than twice what it was. Good job we moved away from neighbours!!

Well thanks for comments, JG, OH comment I hope, was tongue in cheek. :-D
Well I might have to try a bit harder with persuading him not to bark!!
I so do want another for company for him, and I am convinced he would appreciate company, he always wants to be right alongside us whatever we are doing.

Perhaps that's where Jack's should be! Then he'd be quiet! :D :D :D

Seriously, if a first dog is noisy he'll teach a second dog to be noisy too, rather than learn to be quiet. After all, he'll have competition. :)

Most dogs love company of otehr dogs -but believe me, they still love the company of people MORE so that won't change one bit. :) There's 11 dogs here and each and every one of them would chose a human over a dog any time. :)

Bramble follows us like a shadow - but he would be perfectly happy as he was before Tara came along :) :)

Well, Bramble is very much OH's dog, while Tara is mine (and the children's, but as they have up and left, she is mine :D ) - so one dog each :D :D :D
