over the weekend my sisters kept losing their aol connections, today the same's happening to me   Sisters had to re-setup their w/less router connections but aol admitted they were having problems, so why would that affect the router connection?   I had that a while back and was told that I must have moved my router - not possible! :rolleyes:

Anyone know why this happens?

No idea,but I changed from AOHELL a couple of years ago as I couldn't get on line for longer than 5 minutes at a time!

We have been strugling recently with AOL never had any problems before

I haven't had any problems with connection with them.

I changed from them to BT and havent had any problems since. AOL were useless!

Not used AOLhell since they restricted my unlimited service been with ntl ever since

I wonder if it depends what area you're in? I've used them for the last 9 years and have never once had a problem signing in. I get reliable download speeds of 2mb (I check it regularly with internet frog).

I was wondering if it depended on the area too as we're on AOL without problems and so are a couple at the other end of the road also without problems.

In fact I was shocked to hear about all these problems!!:-D

I wondered about that too? My connection is shared through the house into two of the bedrooms and the livingroom. One of the pcs upstairs is usually on 24hrs a day downloading something or another and they've never resctricted my service

To be honest, I think the problem is more to do with the AOL programme on the computer   I've been using Firefox lately and accessing AOL from there when I read my e-mails, but using Firefox as my browser and things are fine ;) so my family has downloaded Firefox too and hopefully there'll be no more trouble. 

I still find it very suspicious that the router settings had been changed (web login and access to change these ;) )  When I queried it, the reply was that my router must have been moved, but that was physically impossible, the router is where no-one can reach it   I had to completely reset the router and all settings before it would work

I am thick with pc's so bear with me. The system you have, does it mean you can have access to all comps in your house? Saw a program that showed how someone could sit outside your house and gain access to your PC and well, have access to everything really. But I'm not sure if this was wireless or router....dont know the difference myself the kids are in bed, they are my helpers :D

But, wondered if your PC had been hacked? (Hacked still makes me think of riding out on a horse ;) )

NO the pc hadn't been hacked ;)  all the pc's in the house connect to the 'net' wirelessly through a router, but not to each other - though I'd like to set that up.  The wireless router connections are encrypted and firewalled so no-one can 'join' hijack or otherwise get free internet (I pay for it so it's MINE! ) or hack into the pc's ;)

I was just wondering tho, if Aol were somehow able to reset things thru their servers etc. ;) 

Restricted service

It was about 3 or 4 years ago since i left AOL but when i was using them i had the unlimited package where i could use the internet for however long i liked. I used to download quite a few music files and left it while i did something else. AOL disconnected quite a few times with a message saying i had exceeded my log in time even when i was actually surfing the web so i had to reconnect but it would not always let me reconnect and many times lost what i was downloading/doing. When i complained to them i was told it was the new way of doing things so everybody had the chance to use the service - ok but i was paying for unlimited service and they still wanted to charge me for this although i was not getting what i was paying for. They were not helpful and infact quite rude so i switched to NTL broadband.

Thats because whilst they can call it an 'unlimited download' type service.... they are ALL subject to a 'fair usage' policy...

Because we are all using the net more and more, and because big business likes to save every penny it can, every companies 'fair usage' policy will differ. So one company will have a really low fair usage limit, after which they will either cut you off or charge you extra, anothers may be much more reasonable.

The reason is that you can hog the connection for your area and really naff up other peoples connections.... but some 'fair' usage limits are distinctly UNfair.

It is however, all there in the small print for you to read - if you didnt... its your own fault.

Aohell are evil, they have always been evil, they will remain evil.

I dont understand why ANYONE uses them, they spoonfeed you the internet which might sound great for n00bs but effectively, you dont learn to use the net to its full potential because you dont learn how to use the net, you learn how to use AOL..(so its no good for n00bs after all....)

A lot of what they sell you is in fact..... nothing. They tried to sell me AOL broadband years ago, which in fact consisted of nothing but the AOL browser system... i had to cough up to BT for broadband line!

When i said to the intensely persistant woman on the phone (id phoned to cancel the free trial dial up AOL that i had used to get online and sort out the broadband), "So you are basically selling me a box full of nothing... i pay you £13 a month for something im already paying BT for" she wnet VERY quiet.....

Get rid of it, AOL is like a blummin virus!
