Hi all,

I just wanted to get a bit of support really. We decided for all sorts of reasons that we'd get Roxy spayed after her last season (namely how down she was after the last one which was so sad, etc), and as we've made the decision to get a new pup next spring we said we'd like to get her op done, so hormones can settle down (is this right?) as if I waited until the next one she'd be spayed around the time we're looking for a pup. I'm also not keen on having a pup just reach puberty when she'd come into season again (given that she'd probably come in anything between 4-5 months after the pup comes. )

I spoke to the vets at the end of her last season and we decided it would be around 1st week in Sept and that she'd come in a few weeks for check up etc. This is around now, but everytime I think about it I get butterflies and can't call. I've just got this dreadful worry in the pit of my stomach which in part is her going through the op - which I fully understand is totally routine - and partly that I'm making the right decision for her.

I know I must make the decision on what's best for her, but it's a big thing...

am I just worrying too uneccessarily?

No your not. We are in the same predicament and it's shocking! We don't want to inflick any pain or discomfort on our lovely baby for a start, or change her personality. She is the perfect Dobe girl right now after a lot of hard work over the past 2 years. She's a trustworthy guard, she's great with other dogs and out in public off lead etc, and most importantly, like you, we don't want to jepadise that side of her. We are going to bite the bullet though as it has to happen. W nowe have a boy Whippet to, who would just love the chance to get in there. So unless we fancy a litter of the fastest, brindle Dobes in the world, this month has to be the last month to um and ah.

Not at all.  I've had many bitches spayed and I worry every time!  My latest one will be getting spayed in November and I know I'll go through exactly the same again!

Sob my heart out in the car every time, but they are always fine thankfully.

How can we not worry when we have to make these decisions for our loved ones. I totally understand whats worrying you as one of my girls will be booked in to be spayed around the same time. It doesnt matter that its a routine operation for the vet, it doesn't make it any easier to think of our own dogs going through it. Fortunately they usually come bouncing through these things while we gain afew more grey hairs and wrinkles. All the best for you and your girl.

I understand why you are so worried and I don't have a bitch!  It's natural because you love them.  Good luck with whatever decision you make :)

Goodness I certainly understand your concerns.  That's why my dogs don't cross the threshold of a Vet's surgery unless they really need to!

Spaying is probably the most common operation that Vets carry out. :)

I was like this too, we had our bernese spayed and I sobbed all over her when she came home, I felt so sorry for her. She was fine within 24 hours but then we had to think about getting our setter spayed and I put off and put off organising it, however her seasons were landing every Christmas and summer so we would get no holidays with her. Finally bit the bullet and she was fantastic- trying to jump into car on way home from vet, within 3 hours she was back to being Miss Nutty. They have had no problems and as we didn't ever intend to breed it has made a big difference to us as we don't need to consider seasons when we are planning hols etc.

I know what you are going through and it is a horrible thing at the time but afterwards they amaze me with their resilience to the op. I cried when I had my last 2 bitches done but they were up and about later that evening.

Can I just say thanks for putting my mind at rest -we've booked her preliminary check-up for next wednesday so the first step is over and done with. :)

 I am sure all will go well with your little girl. We do worry about our dogs but for the right reasons and it just shows that your are a loving owner.

Well....we've done it and Rowan the Dobe is now spayed and free from those horrible seasons.

Her vet Helen checked her uterus and decided to remove her ovaries only. There's a small cut between Rowans teats with 3 stitches and overall, she's not looking to bad, though obvously feeling a little uncomfortable. OH was besides himself yesterday with worry and nearly cried when he saw her after the op, but now he has her home with him(he's in complete attendance) he's happy.

Thanks everyone, you helped us bite the bullet and now the deed is done, I can swank!

You can, sort of, if you are having bad trouble.  You can PM me (please do NOT PMS me), I don't mind telling you what I did.

Well, everything went fine yesterday, the vets/receptionist/nurses were all wonderful. Although not wanting to do a long protracted blubbing farefull I tried to be brave, which only lastest as long as soon as I turned my back, and cried all the way back into town.

Judging by the fact roxy let the street know that the bin men were here this morning, and a cold wet shiney nose and bright alert eyes is belying the mopey look she has, it look slike she'll be back to insanity PDQ. Relief.

I'm glad everything went well. It's hard to be brave isn't it! Gentle hugs to Roxy. :)
