any ideas how to get rid of these horrid things!! Woke up at 3 this morning to Leffey barking, as she is only 10 weeks old assumed she wanted a wee, well pleased as liter training is not her strong point, anyway got down stairs and it was a group of between 8 and 12 slugs she was all excited about, in my kitchen, i have washed the floor several times today. The only place they can be comming in is from behind the washing machine. Makes me feel really quite sick, poor old Storm it is no wonder she wants to sleep upstairs.
any ideas gratefully recieved.
On a nicer note Leffey has had her second injection today and can meet the big wide world soon. 10 weeks old tomorrow and a healthy 12.6kilos.

Sprinkle them with salt
- By LJS Date 24.08.07 10:39 UTC
I would have screamed if I had come down to that :eek: I hate slugs, snails and worms. Anything slimey turns me into a jibbering mess :D

Put a trail of salt behind the washing machine as that should get the slimey blighters :D

- By abraham [gb] Date 24.08.07 12:39 UTC
will try the salt, would love a couple of ducks:cool: but dont think HO would let me, he is still getting use to our rather loud and full of life Leffey, or Asbo as he likes to call her:rolleyes:

We had exactly the same thing last year or the year before ..except when I put the kitchen light on there were between 20 and 30 of the darned things in the kitchen and to this DAY I have no idea how they all got in there....we have never had them before or since
- By spiritulist [in] Date 24.08.07 14:48 UTC
I was thinking ducks too.

Slugs come in under the exterior doors if it's a nice wet night, so maybe check the seals?
- By akh0706 [gb] Date 24.08.07 15:15 UTC
Try mixing vinegar & water & spray along the edge of your kitchen, slugs hate vinegar & it wont hurt your animals unlike slug pellets. I had the same problem with slugs, ants & flying ants & I put neat vinegar down & it's has worked so far! I heard about this in the tv.
- By Rach85 [gb] Date 24.08.07 16:58 UTC
Dont put salt on them on your kitchen floor!!
They will die horribly and convulse and worst of all they bile up this sticky foamy liquid, will be much more of a mess to clean up!

Cant you scoop them up woth a bruch and dustpan and chuck them outside in a bush?
- By ShaynLola Date 24.08.07 17:10 UTC

>Cant you scoop them up woth a bruch and dustpan and chuck them outside in a bush?

So they can slime their way back into your kitchen? Better to scoop them up with the dust pan and brush and chuck them outside in a bucket of salt.  Slugs get shown no mercy round these parts ;-)

I think I read somewhere that if you put down a shallow container of beer by wherever they get in, they will be attracted to it and drown in it.*  At least they'd go with a smile on their face :)

Apparently there has been a huge increase in the slug population due to all the wet weather.

*Please note that the author takes no responsibility for the accuracy of this statement.  She can't remember where she read it.  She may even have made it up. The edges between reality and what goes on in her imagination are a little indistinct at times :)

LOL LOL LOL @ Shayn!!!

The beer sounds best like you say at least they will have a good time drowning!!

I have to be the voice of the slugs....... At least till they invade my home and I chuck them in salt myself! :D :D ;)
- By ShaynLola Date 24.08.07 17:27 UTC

>The beer sounds best like you say at least they will have a good time drowning!!

Unless, of course, I actually did make it up...in which case you'll just have a load of pi**ed up, lairy slugs all over the place, starting fights and scattering bits of kebab everywhere ;-) :P
- By Rach85 [gb] Date 24.08.07 17:29 UTC
Mate your going to make me choke on my coke in a minute! :P

Drunk slugs, thats something I would like to see!
We dont usually see slugs before Mitz does....and yes....she eats them! *gag*!!!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 26.08.07 08:16 UTC
Seriously if you have a slug or snail eater (depending where you live) you need to be careful about a form heart worm (some call it French heartworm).

A pup I bred developed signs of ill health, lack of exercise tolerance etc, and it was discovered she had this problem.  the treatment was Panacur given every month.

The beer thing definately works - FIL used to have a beer trap putside for them. Found loads every morning. Only thing was his pup worked out how to get the lid off
- By ice_queen Date 24.08.07 19:52 UTC
Has anyone seen this?
- By Sullysmum Date 24.08.07 20:38 UTC
As a child i used to go round the garden with the salt pot on slugs and snails and i loved doing it, i put a circle of salt a few years ago on a snail, i have never felt so bad in my life, it was awful will never do it again, at night here i turn the outside light on at night to let the girls out and its like a party on our patio, i just leave them alone and so do the girls.
- By abraham [gb] Date 24.08.07 20:49 UTC
Well going to put some vinegar around the kitchen units and a bowl of larger in the middle of the room (will break OH s heart). Am leaving Leffey in the hall tonight away from said slugs, she has also tried one, could only tell that she had swollowed as she had foam all round her month, disgusting pup. Storm is coming to bed with me, she is far to much of a lady to have slugs crawling over her. Will let you all know how it goes in the morning. Pray for us
Did anyone spot the delibirate spelling mistake?
- By Rach85 [gb] Date 25.08.07 09:02 UTC
Said slugs? Did I get it? What do I win!! :D

So did the plan work, are you Slug free?
- By abraham [gb] Date 26.08.07 07:21 UTC
Well put a bowl of lager in the middle of the floor and they did not touch it, put some vinegar round the room and to my knowledge no slugs! mind you smelt abit like a chip shop. hoping it was a one off.
- By janet taylor [gb] Date 27.08.07 18:54 UTC
If you put oatmeal down around your plants the slugs will eat it and explode!!
