Someone ran a thread on here last week reproducing a statement whereby Dublin councillors had rescinded the 11 breed ban from council properties, as long as these breeds are microchipped and neutered. This statement also said a UK dog charity will organise the neutering with Dublin vets.

Sorry, cannot remember the OP or thread name.
But where did you get your report?
As the link above from BBCnews yesterday is about the ban going ahead.

Sad sad news.

Hi there, this is so sad.

Unfortunately it seems to be spreading as Swansea Council want to do the same by the looks of things, here's a link to the story :-(

Whilst I think this can be the thin end of the wedge, and lead to general banning which I don't agree with, I can understand the reasoning behind it. On some of the really severely troubled estates many of these dogs are owned by people who frankly shouldn't own any living thing, let alone a dog. You could go on to say that a huge percentage are owned by criminal types, drug dealers and plain idiotic macho men. I have had a run in from one of these 'types' who needless to say had a staff. He was quite happily giving it a good kicking because it hadn't returned to him instantly, and when I intervened he held the dog up in front of my face and threatened to set it on my dogs. He then put it back on the ground and set it onto his friends dog right in front of me. It was dreadful and I actually contacted vets in the area to see if a this dog had been brought in with injuries, but with no luck. Thinking about it the type of people they were they were never going to seek vet treatment anyway  I would happily have seen this man banned from owning a staff, and I know exactly which notorious council estate he hailed from.  In the long term it might do a lot of dogs a favour rather than be treated how they are. I am not 'knocking' council house tenants, my sister lives in a council house, but I have seen a lot of problems with certain types of people and staffys. I feel really sorry for the dogs. Can't say I've known it with Dobes and Akitas, and Tosa's are banned anyway.

Well there we are, just my twopenceworth

Well we already know that banning breeds do not stop the wrong person from owning them and I can see this being the same -the responsible (like that poor GSD owner in the BBC report) will be punished, the irresponsible will get off one way or another. Also ten breeds of dog, there's plenty of other breeds -anyone who wanted to train a dog to be aggressive and threatening could do it with many other breeds than those mentioned (after all, one breed that is used a lot for protection work is my own, and that is not one of the ten), so they could just as easily switch breeds...... Again it's the owners that need controlling and banning, not the breeds of dog.

I agree that this ban will not stop the "wrong" sort of people owning them!

I agree that you often see thugs etc with powerful dogs but you also see families etc with these so called "dangerous" breeds, this ban is just awful and my heart really goes out to the poor people and dogs that will lose out because of an idiotic few!!:mad::mad:

Surely they should deal with the people causing problems not Innocent owners and their dogs.

Does anyone know where they are proposing all of these dogs go or are they being pts??

According to a report I read people are being given time to rehome their dogs but if they can't then the dogs will be siezed and destroyed. The same article also says that there are plans to amend the by-laws so that the breeds will also be banned from public parks, so that even non-council tenants won't be able to walk them there.

However this article will have been written some weeks back so might be out of date and inaccurate by the time of publication.

I don't think extending any ban is a good thing, and as I say, I don't support the ban, but can understand the reasoning behind it, especially when being pressured to do something about it. Like anything else though it can soon be used to become anti-dog in all areas which is a real downward slide. Yes I also agree that there would be so many innocent people caught up in it which is not right. Maybe they should chip and register all the existing dogs, but certainly innocent owners should not be parted from their pets. What's the answer though, how do you identify the people who (as I said shouldn't be allowed to own ANY dog) are the culprits?

Enforce existing law, and tenancy agreements.  Evict owners that break the rules and prosecturte thsoe who are anti social and break the law.

And it contains uninformed drivel, sadly. Many reports of children savaged by pitbull types????? Inaccurate sensationalism.

I fully agree that people need to take responsibility for training their pets, adn their pets actions, but I also think statements by politicians and the media need to be informed and balanced.

After all the recent problems with teenagers, I think the councils involved should ban children from estates and public areas.....it would make many areas much safer - including my local park:rolleyes:

I agree that some restrictions need to be put in place - but ban the thugs/druggies/criminals from owning a dog rather than penalize normal dog owners.

That's a ban I definitely agree with

I think the whole thing is disgraceful!!!:mad:

These dogs who have done nothing wrong are going to lose their lives if they can't be re-homed and even those that can be re-homed will be eventually living lives of a recluse if the councils have their way with banning in public places also!!

There are alot of other things they could be spending their time and money on to make the streets safer for everyone etc etc..
