Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Breed Specific Nutrition

Hi, I wonder if some of you guys and gals on here could help me.  I'm putting together a file of information about dog nutrition for people to refer to at work when they need certain info on whatever aspects regarding dogs and nutrititional needs.

Now, I know that with some breeds like dalmations for example there are certain foods/elements that they do not do well with (though am by no means an expert there having never owned dals!) are there any others that you guys have that may need certain nutritional needs that aren't always public knowledges so to speak?

Any info on breeds that are usually sensitive to certain foods, proteins etc would be of a great help as although I have experience in GRs and some other large/giant breeds, there is always more to learn I am sure!

So, anything whether it be about the decent complete diets, RAW etc would be of a great help :)

I often refer people to the dog food project  which details how to pick a good dog food, which ingredients to look for and avoid etc etc. It's the most comprehensive and inbiased site on the net of it's kind that i know of.

You could always down load a free copy of Canine Nutrition & Choosing The Best Food For Your Breed Of Dog

If you are doing this in a professional capacity ie involving clients dogs you will need to ensure all your information is evidence based from well referenced material.  The internet is probably not the best place to find that :).  Your vet may be able to source some appropriate information or point you in the right direction to research it from a quality source.  Fail in that, you could do it the long way via the Breed Clubs particularly using any Health Committees.

Well there are people out there who advocate breed specific diets.

However it is a tad tricky finding elk for elkhounds, seals for huskies, etc in the UK.

Curiously enough these breeds tend to do very well on all sorts of other protein sources...............

Thank goodness I don't have to go out and hunt wild boar every week, what a chore!

The funniest thing I've heard so far was that all 4 BSDs should have different diets as they originate from different  places in Belgium......!

The only thing I would say about the double coated arctic breeds is that they need fat in their food for their coats, but also care needs to be taken over not letting them get fat as they do well on little if not working hard or kept in extreme conditions.

That's grand, cheers for that :)

Thanks for all your help, it's not really for professional use so to speak, more so for widening my knowledge in the field and as a reference guide really, although in my job I do have to give advise a lot of the time on dog nutrition so do have to ensure it is correct.  Many Thanks though peoples :)

For shar-pei it's best to avoid wheat, maize, soya and any protein source that is vague as it's just asking for skin problems. Also the fewer ingredients and less fractions of stuff in the bag the better. Beef isn't too good for a lot of them either. When feeding a complete food, rice is usually okay with a single source protein like lamb, chicken, turkey, duck or fish and 21% protein for an adult is ideal.

Basically, don't feed them sh*t and not expect problems, but that goes for any breed IMHO.
