Has anyone had any experience of a dog with Perineal Hernia, if so, Did you opt for surgery?

No one has then, Perhaps someone can tell me, how I find the best Vet to do this operation. It is advised to be done by a very experienced vet in this feild, as there can be complications in the recovery from such an op, if it is undertaken by someone who has not had experience.

Sorry Charm didnt see your post earlier. My old crossbreed had an operation for a very small perineal hernia but it was actually carried out by our own vet at the time.  Scamp recovered from the op without any problems at all he was 9 at the time and lived until he was 14. Not much help I dont suppose as I don't remember alot more about it.

I'v not had experience of this, but maybe it would be a good idea to ask your vet to refere you on to one of the animal hospitals, for expert advice and a vet competant (experienced) in this proceedure. This is if you don't feel your own vet is able, or their facilities good enough for a good recovery. it is your dog, and you are footing the bill, so make sure you have this op where you want it, and have full specialist advice. i would check your insurance policy covers for this first though, because it could be a huge bill.

Charm - I have only just found this post so apologies for not replying sooner.  My male Boxer had this when he was about 6 years old.  My regular dog Vet was reluctant to do the op as she had only ever done 2 before, both on much smaller, less muscled dogs.  They have to be very careful to avoid certain nerves.  They take a muscle that goes down the leg and re-position it to replace the damaged one.  She gave me the name of a more specialised Vet who was fairly local to me.  Anyway, we had the op done and he has been fine with it ever since - he will be 11 in November.  Over the last 2 years or so he has shown a loss of muscle on that side, and some hip stiffness, but that could be arthritis and may not have anything to do with the Perineal op.  I haven't had the stiffness investigated due to his age and his otherwise good health.  I hope this is not too late to help with your query.
