Hi All,

We used to feed our BH's on Beta Complete food only and they would poo for britain and we would occasionally feed them tripe, but not often. Since last week we have ordered a month's worth of Tripe and chicken mince from Landywood's. We now feed them 2 each a day with only a little Beta Complete each. I have noticed a big difference in there Poo, there is virtually none at all. Is this normal? Please say it is, makes life so much easier, than having to scoop loads a poop a day. :-)

Yes, but virtually none at all?  I think you do need to keep an eye that they are not getting constipated as mine did when I switched to a complete that boasting low output and anal glands were not emptying either.

Yes, it is normal to get much less poo when you stop feeding cereals.  However, I suspect that the tripe is not designed to be fed alone (albeit with a small amount of complete).  It might be a good idea to contact the suppliers of the meat and check whether it should be feed with something else - eg a mixer or bones and veggies.

Thanks all for your replies, we do feed them the tripe or chicken mince with a little complte mixed, just to be sure they are reciving all their vitamins etc and to make the change from complete to tripe/chicken mince all the time. I should of started feeding them raw years ago. I think its going to cost us approx £100 a month to feed our dogs now, way worth it.

If you are switching to a raw diet totally you will need to feed more than one variety of meat source in order that your dogs get all the nutrients needed to stay healthy.

I feed a GR and a terrier a raw diet at a cost of around £30 for a month and a half :)

It's not the size of the poop that expresses anal glands,it's the firmness.Cereal based diets tend to form large,but less than firm poops,so the largeness does nothing to help express them.Anal gland conditions are a big problem in modern dogs,and i can only attribute this to the high grain cheapo diets available today..

My dogs' low output food poo was plenty firm but just didn't have the necessary bulk to express the glands which are, of course, outside the anus and therefore it has to stretch out to compress them. For us a grain diet was a success in this area as well as generally.

A little bit of grain isnt going to hurt,however a predominately grain diet is counterproductive for a carnivore in so many ways..

As your dogs have a problem, its good you have managed to find a diet to treat them. :) however, this does not change the fact that dogs fed on natural foods such as meat. tripe etc do not have the same waste to pass out of their bodies, so smaller or less quantity poo is a normal occurance. I think Beta is one of the foods that are full of cereals and give lots of poo anyway, so I imagine it would be a change for the better ;) :D :D

I have 2 dogs fed the same every day and the poos can be totally different

Mine have been fed on BARF all their lives but the bitch 'outputs' bigger waste than the dog and she is fed weight wise less food than him because she's obviously smaller. BARF was a pleasant revelation to me as instead of poop scooping 17 times a day I'm now down considerably so it saves me time

Must just add that since I started on BARF several yrs ago I have never had any anal gland probs. Yet previously to this, my then dogs that had a different diet used to suffer with full glands a couple of times a year.
