Hi I don't want to worry you but my daughter was bitten recently (8 bites in total) and her ankles were swollen. She needed antibiotics which she had to take for 5 days. After completing the course it all flared up again only much worse. She went back to the doctor to be told she now has cellulitis, more and stronger antibiotics were prescribed. If you can I would see a doctor to be on the safe side particularly as you are going away. Hope you have a lovely time at the wedding and your bite has subsided by then.

This happened to my mum a couple of weeks ago - her ankle was HUGE, as if she'd broken a bone  She's just finished the ABs a couple of days ago so will see what happens now!

Also happened to a friend of hers around the same time. She decided not to go to the doctors and then ended up having to go to casualty because it got so bad. The doctor she saw there said he'd seen 4 other people that day with v.nasty bites that had lead to cellulitis. Very strange. She was prescribed penicillin, had an allergic reaction causing her throat to swell up, and ended up back in casualty in an ambulance!

I usually find antihistamines take mossie bite swelling away - I take a one-a-day tesco hayfever relief tablet. I cover myself in Avon skin so soft dry oil every day after my shower so don't actually get bitten anymore :D

Have a great time :)

I got bitten on Saturday and had a horrible allergic reaction - each bite swelled up to a lump the size of my fist, which made wearing shoes (I had a bite on my foot) impossible and sitting down (bites at the backs of my knees) very painful. The antihistamines made me woolly-headed and I forgot I was on shift yesterday morning and the vet had to phone and ask where I was!  Luckily there were no clients waiting, and he has a sense of humour! But now I don't know whether to take the tablets to ease the reaction and be muddled, or not take them and suffer, but be clear-headed. I think the clear-headedness will have to win.
- By JaneG [gb] Date 01.08.07 08:35 UTC
I'm almost permanently muddled - it's great I have an excuse now :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.08.07 11:40 UTC
Also is your tetanus up to date.
- By Lea Date 01.08.07 12:28 UTC
It is feeling a but better now I have been moving on it.
Re, Tetnus, as long as you have the first 3 or 4 in your youth you are covered for life!!!
I am off 1 1/2 hours late!!!!!!
Wish me luck

Re Tetnus, i had one Tetanus jab in 1988, then had an accident in 2001 and had to have another Tetanus jab, was told in hospital they only last 10 years?
- By craigles [gb] Date 01.08.07 18:40 UTC
my vaccination card is out ready for my holiday and I just looked and it says my booster is due in 2008 ten years after having the last, I always check at least 6 months before I go away that all my jabs are up to date even though I'm only going EU! paranoid some may say but I do like to be careful x

I'm really not sure about this at all :D :D :D I don't know whether I had any as a child (born in 1955). I must have had some (I assume ???? ) when I had a bad break of the femur in 1968. I had a full course sometime about 15/20 years ago, when my GP said I had to start again :D :D I've had none since and I've not been asked to have any more - so I assume that I don't need any :D :D

all confused Daisy, our Dr does it every ten years so I always go for a booster, but I have the hepatitis jab regular (working in residential care) and all the others as we go abroad a couple of times a year. From a quick google I found this link
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/ate/asthmaandallergy/201494.html
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.08.07 18:58 UTC
I have had only two that I know of unless they were given with baby jabs, both were for bad mozzie bites. The last one was in 1983.
- By craigles [gb] Date 01.08.07 19:05 UTC
wonder if i'm having a booster every 10 yrs without needing to, hoping someone medical comes along soon and clarifies, if not I'm going to see Brenda and Daisy (the spitz) before I go away and she is a GP so I'll ask her x
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 01.08.07 19:16 UTC
I have my tetanus booster every ten years. Not so long ago it was every 3!
- By Daisy [gb] Date 01.08.07 19:25 UTC

> Not so long ago it was every 3

??? Really - not in the last 20 years ??? :)

Daisy
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 01.08.07 19:29 UTC
Not the last 20, but certainly within the last 30.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 01.08.07 19:34 UTC
Golly :D :D Apart from having a tetanus jab in hospital (I assume that I had them, I don't know, I was only 13) no-one ever mentioned having them until I asked my GP about them 15/20 years ago :D :D :D

I split my knee open and fractured my kneecap in 1976, and it was the staff at the hospital who told me tetanus boosters were needed every 3 years, if you worked with animals or gardens (it's a soil-borne bug). It was shortly before Boy was born that the protocol changed.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 01.08.07 19:44 UTC
We certainly never had any jabs at school (apart from the BCG). I'll have to check with my GP whether I need any more next time I go. I don't even know my GP's name or the previous one (haven't seen one for about 10 years :D :D ) - time I went :D :D

I missed the BCG too, though got the Rubella when I got married.

Just got back and not got down to the bottom of the thread so sorry if this has been said BUT,
I wirk with soil all day everyday and even when I started 9 years ago, they said every 10 years.
Now they have changed it and you are resistant for life after the first 3 or 4 :) :)
Will go and look for proif if someone else hasnt put it on before I get to the bottom!!!!!

As I said, the protocol changed (to every 10 years) shortly before my son was born, and he's 21 now. So you were told the right thing when you started work 9 years ago. :)
- By Daisy [gb] Date 01.08.07 19:07 UTC
If you were born after 1961 then you probably had them as a baby :)

I was born in January 62, but no idea if I had them as a child. All I can remember is having an accident not so many years ago and them asking if tetanus was up to date etc., Do you know I never knew any of this I just thought I had to go every ten years! I'm so naive it's unreal! I'd believe anything anyone told me wouldn't i?
- By HuskyGal Date 01.08.07 21:50 UTC
I find Antisan (or boots own in the orange tube) Antihistimine cream works better than tablets :)
(and a cool pack or ice pack/ bag of frozen peas wrapped in cloth removed every 20mins)
- By ceejay Date 01.08.07 21:57 UTC
I kept up to date with my tetanus and when I was about 50 I was told they wouldn't give me any more! Hope the ankle gets better soon.
- By Ems Mum [gb] Date 01.08.07 22:01 UTC
Have been told not to get any more tetanus jabs as after the last one- about 20 years ago- I had an allergic reaction to it!

>a cool pack or ice pack/ bag of frozen peas wrapped in cloth

That's what the doctor recommended, with my legs elevated, but I didn't think it'd go down well at work! ;) :D

I suffer with very bad reactions to insect bites. If I know I am going away to a country that has lots of mosquitoes I take a 'one a day' antihistamine tab on my way out there and every single day while I am there. This doesn't stop them biting but the reaction is dulled down and I can cope with it. If I am late taking it by a few hours and get bitten then i really notice a big difference in the amount of swelling and redness so it's important to keep the antihistamine levels up. The same goes if i am going to be working in the garden. I also carry a tube of antihistamine cream in my bag, but find that if I don't apply it immediately then it has no effect. if I do get bitten and i haven't taken antihistamine then I get a lot of relief from putting a cold flannel on the bites, especially at night time when the itching gets worse. If I don't manage to slap some antihistamine on at the start then I find that a tiny smear of hydrocortisone works well but you can't use it willy-nilly

Over the last couple of weeks I have had loads of bites, at first assumed it was fleas (which make my skin crawl ugggh) so went out and spent about £40 on flea stuff - then realised it was mossies. I have been applying tea tree oil and it really helps to take the redness and swelling away from the site of the bite. Doesn't smell nice but hey it works.:)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 03.08.07 00:59 UTC
I love the smell of tea tree.

Re - Tetanus
Tetanus - providing that the childhood vaccinations are up-to-date, a tetanus booster is only required for people who are at risk of contracting tetanus following injury.
This is taken from NHS direct site here - http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=208&sectionId=30

I had my 4th tetnus booster 2 weeks ago. I was told then that the current thinking is that after the 5th one you are covered for life.

And I SURVIVED, JUST LMAO
Foot swelled up worse on the wednesdau, but went down so I was presentable in the delicate sandles I was wearing yesterday :D :D :D :D Still itching tho :( :(
It was a wash out :( :(
Got there at 6pm and it was raining :( people in tent beside helped me put the tent up in the end, but the ground was so squelchy it was horrible :(
Had a god day thursday :) Managed to get dressed into pale pink and white for the wedding on friday without getting mud all over it LOL
It rained most of the day yesterday for the wedding :( :( But had a great day :)
And then it was raining most of the night and the wind was very bad :(
The tent if now rolled up in the garage along with ground sheets and bedding compartments, All with muddy water on them. Luckily I have 2 weeks off to sort it out.
Going to erect it in my garden tomorrow and hose it down!!!! Then lieave it to dry. And put the bedding compartments in the washing machine on a cool wash!!!
Ric didnt manage to get there so ws on my own for the whole time instead of the first 2 days.
And the drive home was horrible!!!! Road works, accidents etc etc.
So the first time away for 2 years and it wasnt the best LOL
But saying that I had a good time and more relaxed now than I have been for a while LOL
Needed a break,
And the wedding was wonderful, My mate looked gorgeus and I was priveledged to be there with my kids as they were the only children there apart from the pageboy and bridesmaid!!!!! :D :D :D :D
