Hi i need some advice took my bitch to a stud dog and everything looked good she was standing really well and moving her tail to the side, the stud dog was licking her like mad but never once attempted to mount her, could it just be she is not quite ready and he can sense that, we are going to try again tomorrow, we do have another stud dog lined up but would rather go with my first choice.

Is it an experienced stud dog? If so then yes, she's probably just not quite ready - most experienced stud dogs won't bother until the right time.

Hes sired 2 litters but never had any problems, would it be worth having a pre mate test done, iv never had 1 done or shall i just leave it to the stud dog to tell us, the stud dog owner does not live too far away and they said they would keep my girl with them for a few days if i wanted.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.07.07 14:44 UTC
After a couple of litters I would expect a stud in my breed to know his job and have had many dogs tell my girls to stop being silly as they weren't ready yet.

I had this for two days when I went to Finland with my bitch and then he mated her on the next 3 days, and a litter of 7 pups was the result, not the balance of sexes I would have liked, but there you go, can't have everything.

Thanks for the replies, the stud dog seems interested hes been licking her and following her around but has made no attempt to mount her, do you think it will be best to keep trying them together everyday or every other day?
- By JaneG [gb] Date 20.07.07 16:34 UTC
If you live close enough then I would try every day.
- By pepsi1 Date 20.07.07 16:40 UTC
Its only about 20-30 mins away so its not a problem going everyday.
- By welshie [in] Date 20.07.07 18:13 UTC
is it when you have 3 matings more likely that the litter is mainly more one sex than even sexes because i had 3 matings and had 7 dogs and 2 bitches

It is the male that determines sex, but in multiple births it is pretty much pot luck.

The male I used though looking at his previous 5 litters produced more male than female offspring, so maybe it is best to look at what a male has produced before.

I've know some males to be like that and I usually get the bitch excited close to them and it usually works, but she may just not be quite ready yet.  An experienced stud usually knows the right time.  Lastar only mates the girls when the time is right and doesn't waste his time or his little bank before hand :d

We went over again this evening the male was showing abit more interest my girl stood nicely while he was licking her but the minute he tried to mount her she moved so shes not quite ready so we will go over every day.
Thanks for all the replies you have all been great.xx

Is she a maiden?  If so you may have to encourage her to stay still.  I don't like the thought of forcing anything but I have held one bitch very steady while the dog mounts.  Second time round she was more relaxed and let him do the trick!
- By pepsi1 Date 20.07.07 22:51 UTC
Yes she is a maiden, i did try to hold her and she was good while he was licking and sniffing but that was it, She is only on day 10 but her mum is always quiet early i was told by her breeder so we thought we would try her, i think she is just not quite ready yet and if it all fails its not the be all and end all theres always next season, i would rather just leave it for now then her get distressed but fingers crossed were just abit early yet.
- By JaneG [gb] Date 21.07.07 05:01 UTC
As JJ has said maiden bitches will often not just stand there while a dog mounts them, no matter how ready they are - they do tend to leap away - then either want to play or eat the dog. Thats why you have helpers :) You should have a firm hold of her collar and reassure her if necessary. The stud dog owners can deal with the other end.

Every bitch is different, and every season she is ready differently too, so it sounds like she just isn't quite ready. If she isn't getting stressed out I'd keep trying her, but if she is getting stressed I'd leave it for a day and try her again. If you decide not to go for it this season then I would try the premate tests for next time. You have to start that early enough in her season so that the vet can get an idea of when the changes start. It's probably too late this time for the test.

I personally don't think it's too late to start blood tests - if you can get one done today that will give you some idea of what's going on with her.  If she's not ready a couple of days away from the stud dog may make her more receptive when she does go.  Just because her mother was early does not necessarily mean she will also be.  Good luck.

Hi just wanted to say thanks for all they great replies, we must of been abit early we had a slip mating on saturday and a 40 min tie on monday so fingers crossed.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.07.07 14:15 UTC
I would go back again today to make certain.
- By pepsi1 Date 25.07.07 15:12 UTC
Spoke to the stud dog owner this morning and she asked if we wanted to go back over today because of the slip mating so went back over this afternoon and had another good mating tied for around 30 mins, just the waiting game now.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.07.07 15:13 UTC
Sounds good to me :D
- By pepsi1 Date 25.07.07 15:20 UTC
I just hate the waiting,iv rang the vet to try and arrange for him to get a scanner it takes him a while to try and sort 1 out, does anyone know of anyone else who scans around the bristol area, the women my vet gets in is great but sometimes shes not available or the vet just cant get hold of her.
- By SharonM Date 25.07.07 18:04 UTC
My vet scans, he's in Bradley Stoke, if you are interested pm me.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.07.07 22:10 UTC
My vet (Staple hill) has a scanner, but he is very good at Palpation so I ahve himcheck for me at 25 to 28 days and if he confirms pregnancy I don't bother with the scanner.

He is really very good and was able to tell me my Kizi wasn't as far as 28 days, so I wasjn't wiorried when she went well over her dates.
