I have a phone in my lounge but would like one in the bedroom, which is downstairs in a bungalow, to do this does it only have to have one of those boxes fixed to the wall and does anyone know how much it would cost bt to do? thanks.

If you get cordless phones you only need one plugged into the wall - all the rest just need an electric socket to charge them. Alternatively if its not too far you can run an extension from one room to the next.

Was just going to say that about the cordless ones.  I have the main one in my living room and another in my bedroom, but with some you can get up to four handsets.

I'd just use an extension lead if you can and clip it to the skirting boards out the way incase its for broadband connection too?
I'd hate to think what BT would charge my husband put us an extra phone socket in the bedroom purely for the internet if i needed it as i couldnt work out how to do wireless :D and it took him 5mins tops...

If its just for the phone get the cordless ones like the others have said :)

We've just bought one with 4 handsets, you only plug the main one into a BT/Cable socket, the rest just need a power supply.

I switched to the cordless handsets everyone else mentioned and they're the best. I have them all over the house, even in the attic and didn't have to run cords anywhere. A dual set would cost far less than having an engineer come out to fit an extension. Based on my last service visit I would guess it to be around £80 to have them fit a box.

May not be the same for you what with different wiring and circuitry but here, Ontario, Canada, it is recommended that a household have at least one wired and corded phone as they will work in a power outage.  You may not hear the ring of an incoming call but you can call out.  Hopefully where you want to call out to is not also undergoing a power outage.  :)  something to check out maybe?  as it sounds as if some have only cordless.

Phone systems are the same in that respect JJ. We have the old analog phone in the cupboard plus our mobiles so yes, we only have the digital wireless system plugged in.

The only problem with the cordless type I find is on the rare occasion you have a power cut the phones are useless so I keep an old very old plug in phone in a cupboard upstairs in case of emergency and just connect it if the power supply fails and  also keep my mobile charged up

I have an ancient dial phone in case of power cuts :)  Well, I have two of them actually.  They came with the house and I love them.  I would use them all the time but I do like to wander about when I'm on the phone.

Right pretend im stupid , i have a wall box in my lounge with my telephone/answer machine plugged into it, if you have a cordless phone does it not need a telephone wall socket just a electrical socket, if it needs just an electrical socket how does the phone know to ring when someone rings my normal telephone number, does that make sense?
- By Daisy [gb] Date 20.07.07 17:27 UTC
You get a base unit plus 1/2/3 other units. The base unit must be plugged into the telephone socket and a power socket. The other units only need to be plugged into a power socket :)

You could probably get a 'doubler' so that you could plug both (base unit and answer phone) into the same telephone socket - not sure :)

Oh i see now, the only way i could use a cordless it is to get rid of my other phone/answer machine in the lounge and buy two or more in a cordless set? The telephone answer machine is all in one.

Will come on here if ever we decide to get a mobile phone or dvd player in the future, im just so behind!

You might be able to have them both plugged in together see http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-Way-Phone-Doubler_W0QQitemZ290139729847QQihZ019QQcategoryZ57238QQcmdZViewItem

Then you could leave your current phone in your lounge and use the cordless handset in, say, the kitchen while plugging the other units in your bedroom :) You would have to check this with someone more knowledgeable tho' :D

There are cordless phones that are like corded ones, they have a base that plugs into a phone socket but the handset can communicate with the base without wires. There are newer phones that have a base unit that plugs into the wall but it not only transmits the signal to its handset but to mulitple handsets. You can have as many as the base supports; usually up to 6. The extra handsets only need a power outlet to recharge their batteries. You can both styles in the same house as your current phone but you would need a second phone socket. If you want to avoid having to put a second socket in then you could buy one of the new style cordless. You can buy a basic set with a base unit and one other handset for not a lot of money. If you wish to have more phones later on you can buy additional handsets (must work with the base unit so plan on getting the same model or a compatible one).

I don't think that two sockets are necessary if a doubler is used !! See my posts :)
