Hi We are due in August to have our local competition of fireworks displays. My gsp has (only last year) been terrified (shaking foaming at the mouth, almost hyper ventilating ) of any bangs ..  Was wondering if anyone had used the "crash Bang Wallop " cd to desensitise their dogs?
If there are good reports I'm thinking of purchasing one from the website!

I haven't, but I'd also be interested in reviews as my doberboy suffers with this also.  He used to be as bad as you describe - he's much better now, there's no bad shaking or foaming, and that's through a little bit of DAP (diffuser from the vet) and work on my part, ignoring him when he's reacting and praising when he's distracted for a moment.

But that only gets him so far, so now I'm looking at more proactive methods like you - especially since some numbskull set off an evening of fireworks at the end of my road last week without so much as a whisper of warning.

My eldest is also scared silly of fireworks, but have never found her to react to them on a CD I bought or on TV, so I'd be dubious that it would work - but will be interested to hear your experience if you try it.

Bizarrely, although she will be climbing the walls indoors, my husband has discovered that if he picks up a ball to throw, she'll charge out to the garden and play ball all night whilst it goes on around her.  Mad.

My dog doesn't react at all to the television but he definitley reacts to the Sounds Scary CD I bought. I have to keep the level really low at the moment. If you do a search for fireworks and CD you'll see loads of posts about this. I asked myself around 3 weeks ago.

Slightly off topic - Tara is scared of fireworks and thunder, but is a lot better than she used to be. When we are out for walks, if she is off lead and hears (or thinks she hears) a bang, she sticks to me like glue (I always thought that she would bolt for home). If she is on the lead she pulls for home like a steam train :D :D :D Anyone else's dog do this ???

Yes, Remy does.  He's also scared of thunder - a little over a year ago, I took him and Opi out for a walk in drizzle, only to be caught out 15 minutes' walk from home in the biggest thuderstorm I've ever seen in my old town, and it was directly over the town as well.  Enormous lightning strikes, scared the hell out of him and he damn near dislocated my shoulder trying to get home - if he hadn't had a halti harness on he would've done it.

If we're out in the garden and there's thunder, he's right there up against my leg straight away.  Same indoors, he follows me everywhere and glues himself to my leg.  When all the storms were going a few weeks ago he unplugged my printer because he was trying so hard to get under the computer desk by my feet! :p

Daisy could this be because when Tara is on lead she can take you home, if she bolted home off lead she would leave you behind and be on her own with horrible noises.

Could be, Rox :) I always assumed that if she was off lead, she would bolt home if she was frightened. We live next to the fields where we walk so, fortunately, she could get home without crossing any roads :)

My first dog bolted on me a couple of times (scared of fireworks and hot air baloons) but eventually she decided ti was safer to run to me :D  Sadly the noise phobia had meant that she jumped my fences initially in panic, and after that got a taste for escapology and it indirectly led to her death at only 3 1/2.

Mitz has never suffered from it but my friend used it on her Newfoundland and it worked wonders!
The poor thing used to shake and wimper hiding behind the sofa  but now he sleeps through it, so defo reccomend it! :)
