My puppies are 3 weeks old Mum is feeding them fine so what age would you start weaning them and what would be the best food to give them when starting to wean and how often. Mum is still with them through night but they do seem a bit hungry first thing then they are more contented through day.  Should I give them a little something on a morning.

I start weaning at three weeks with raw scraped beef (not mince), just a teaspoon per puppy (labrador-sized breed) on the first couple of days.

Or, playing Devil's Advocate here (I don't feed dry food) you could either buy a good quality puppy food and soak it really well to make a porridge, or buy a weaning porridge.  Depending on the size of the puppies, you offer them a bit on a spoon. Once you start feeding puppies, you need to make sure that water is available. (safely - you don't want them to drown!)   You can then move on to offering them food in a dish - but they will have fun paddling in it and then licking each other.  Make sure that you clean them and dry them when they have finished - or if your breed is like mine, mum will be more than happy to oblige :)

I start at three weeks and I feed them once on the first day, twice on the second, three times on the third, up to six times a day, evenly spaced.  They will be more likely to take the food if mum has been kept away for an hour or two before you try.

Hopefully you bought your bitch from a knowledgeable breeder and they would be a good person to contact for any advice, particularly that may be specific to your breed.  Good luck with your babies!

I do roughly the same as above, but only go up to four meals a day as Mum takes care of any more.  I soak my puppy food (which Mum will have been eating), and add some puppy milk formula to make it into a runny gruel.  As pups get the hang of it more and more food is added and eventually the milk is stopped.

From 4 weeks of age I will feed pups a variety of different meats at one of their 4 regular meals, so that they will adapt easily to any kind of feeding preference the new owner will have.

I always start weaning at 3 weeks too, mine usually have scrambled egg made with goats milk, which is gone the minute I put the plate down. :-)  You have so many choices of food to give them, I personally prefer scrambled egg, soaked and mashed dry puppy complete, (good brand) and as JG fresh mince and chicken. At 4 weeks I mix meats, white fish and chicken with rice. It is good to give a variety of foods and tastes.

And at leaving time 7-8 weeks they start with Scrambled egg, complete puppy, complete puppy, and then a meat/fish/chicken with rice.  You need to make sure that your pup gets used to their complete food so that new owners who although advised to give a mixture of foods by myself may not continue daily. So make sure they have at least 2-3 meals a day of your chosen puppy food to continue at their new homes. :-)

You ask this very same question on your last litter. I would think the advice you were given at that time has not changed in the mean time, so I would refer back to that thread if you have 'forgotten' so soon :) You could also try using the search facility as this topic does come up time and again. Not usually from the same person though.
