Topic Dog Boards / General / Very proud mummy post

I have just got to share this as I am bursting with pride at my girl Shady.
She is now 2yrs old and up until a couple of months ago was extremely fear aggresive with all dogs and anything with wheels.
She would lunge barking and carrying on at cars, bikes and anything on wheels and lunge barking at all dogs in sight. No fun with a 36kg dog acting like this.
I have for months and months been slowly working to improve it taking it very very slowly so as not to take her outside her comfort zone.
Slowly over the last couple of months she has got so she is fine with cars and vans providing they are not too noisy or fast and is now not as bad with bikes, as long as they don't suddenly shoot past close from behind making her jump. Some lorries as long as not too loud and rattly have also gone past without to severe a reaction. The only time she still can't cope is when the roads are very wet and there is the swishing noise of the water.
Her attitude with dogs is very much improved as well.
This last week she accepted another dog a small spaniel running loose on the field while she was off lead playing with her frisbee. I knew this paticular dog wouldn't charge up and try leaping all over her and knew she would not go over to that. It did however today run up to her within a few feet and she looked and then come straight back to me. Then two days ago a Golden Retriever was down the field a distance away and she was fine when it trotted past with its owner, and finally today another dog in the field a little yorkshire terrier who I knew never left its owner so I let her off to play frisbee and all was fine.
It was so nice to know I didn't have to put her on lead to stop her panicking.
I have to be careful to make sure its not a dog that will run up wanting her to play or be pushy with her as she is not confident enough to cope with that yet.
I hope with all these positive interactions though she will improve enough to accept most dogs even those that want to play one day. I just have to choose dogs carefully at the moment I can't afford to let her get outside her comfort zone with the wrong dog while off lead and go backwards.
I am just so proud of how far she has come on lately, a few months ago I would never have dreamed I could be doing this.
To most of you with easy dogs to walk it probably doesn't sound much but if you could have seen how bad she was this is like a humungous achievement for her.

Great news, Bev :-D
It's wonderful when you start to see the results of all your efforts isn't it ? :)

Hope Shady continues to do well :)

Oh Well Done!  I know exactly how you feel and how much this means to you - this time last year I was crying every time I took my dog out for a walk.  But with all the advice I got on here I'm a different owner and Louis is  a different dog.

It will get even better over time as well - you have every right to be very proud  :)

Congratulations on all your hard work. I'm sure Shady appreciates being in a world that's just a little less scary :) I hope she continues to improve.

Thanks everyone.
The amount of times people have said to me to give up on her, and they would never want a dog like her, but at home with us she is the most gentle kind loving girl in the world, no guard dog as she will let anyone in for a fuss and we love her to bits.
Anyway what would her future have been if I was like these other people and got shot of her just because she has trouble coping with things when out, very bleak I think.
Ok I cannot just put her on a lead and head off for a walk along the roads, it all has to be carefully planned to get her in car and to the field at times of the day, when I am least likely to bump into boistrous dogs and one of these times is 6am 7 days a week whether I want a lay in or not I can't have it and we don't walk as such, except down the road to the field, then in, where I stand one end to watch for dogs entering and throw her frisbee which she is addicted to, but she comes home exhausted from her game and happy which is the main thing.
I love her to bits and will arrange my life round her happiness, she is definatly worth it.

Extremely well done, hard work and understanding your dog can work miracles.

Keep up the good work, glad you are not relaxing after the progress, long way to go, but boy you are both doing so well. Here you go 3 stars. *** :-D
