Hey guys, my mam got a Great Dane puppy and shes getting fed 3 times a day but yet always seems to be hungry, how much exactly should she be feeding her? She was awful thin when we got her and is slightly putting on weight but still not sure if she is getting enough.

Any help appreciated, cheers

Aimee

A lot depends on the age of the pup -how old is she? Up to 12 weeks of age should mean 4 meals a day.

How old is she, and what is she being fed?

Rearing giant breed puppies is a pretty specialist area.  My first port of call would be the breeder who will have that expertise

Even though the pup was very thin when they got her?

I think my port of call would be "other" Great Dane Breeders!

She was born April 14th! And she is on eukanuba (about 3 mugs) and 1/3 tin meat 3 times a day!

Shes awful bad thou for not wanting to eat unless you stay there with her

Hi

Did she come with a feeding plan? She's not getting any walks is she? Are you still in touch with her breeder?
- By Isabel Date 11.07.07 13:50 UTC
Well the breed club then )
But we don't know what age the puppy was, I would think they go through a lanky stage like every other breed, perhaps even more so.  Presumably "mam" liked the look of the breeder's dogs or she wouldn't have wanted a puppy, but then again.......:)

So shes about 12 weeks now? is she upto date with her worming and has she been to the vets yet? 3 mugs 3x a day seems an awful lot my 3 are fully grown and only have 1 and a half mugs 2x daily as pups they only had a mug and a bit 3x..

I know a few breeders in Ireland if you want to pm me and i can forward you their details on for some help.. :)

@Carla - My mother was the one who dealt with the breeder along with my father, and the breeder said feed her 3 times a day with the biccies and tinned meat. At first she didnt touch that but purely cause she was settleing in. By feeding plan do you mean? Where to be fed? Or when to be fed? She gets fed in the morning, afternoon and night. She also gets fed away from any of our other dogs. She has only went on two walks and was literally few hundred yards was all to get her used to the surrounding areas and lead. We wont walk her regualary till she has built up her bones a bit better, we have a big back garden and she is out in that along with 2 of our other dogs playing. Yes as far as i know she is still in contact with the breeder, she just asked me about feeding and i said id pop a post on here to ask.

@Mygirl - Yep that would be correct, she is about that age! She is up to date on her worming too. Also been to the vet for a full check up and got the all clear. She is a very happy puppy and rather playful. She is really gangley now but course she is and she is going to grow into a big adult. Now when i say she gets that, as i said in previous posts if no one is with her eating she just walks away from the food and leaves it, sometimes going back to it, others not. If she dosnt we take it off her so she realises to eat when she is given it. She can be very hungry some days, thats reason of the first post. It is the familys first dane and would rather ask q's before it turns into something more. Ill get my mam to ring the breeder and explain the situation and if that dosnt resolve much ill get back to you on that breeders info

Thanks all

Certainly doesn't look thin.

You should have had a diet sheet with her advising frequency amount and kinds of food.
- By Ktee [us] Date 12.07.07 01:41 UTC
The only food i know of that has been tested solely on great danes, and passed,is eaglepack.

If you need to ask any questions or find any info on Danes this is the site to go to.

Are you feeding the large breed puppy eukanuba,or gone straight to the adult formula?
- By Aimee_G [ie] Date 12.07.07 10:09 UTC
@mygirl - yep the litter was merles and bostons, my dad said he wanted to bring 2 home with him, the one they have now and her boston brother! I saw a pic he was lovely.

@Brainless - its when ya are standing over her and looking down on her back, she looks thin then. And her ribs are sort of sticking out too. Could be just us jumping to conclusions that we think she is skinny cause we have had no experience with this breed and being over protective of her. As far as i know, there was no diet sheet, just told what food to feed her as they were being fed on it when the breeder had her.

@Ktee - Thanks for the link, ill pass all this info onto my mother so she knows, ill print it off. She is on the eukanuba puppy junior large breed food.
