This aftenoon I noticed that Harley's eyelid was beginning to swell up. On closer investigation he had a tick that had burrowed into his eyelid just where his eyelashes grow. Being in such a position I didn't want to try and remove it myself so off we went to the vet. They have managed to get it all out but said that it had burrowed almost through his eyelid and he now has an infection in the lid.

He had an antibiotic injection and we have to take him back tomorrow if the lump gets any bigger. His eyelid was bleeding after the tick had been removed and is really swollen :(

He is brushed and inspected every day as he is walked in woods and spends a lot of time in the undergrowth - mainly bracken - which is a favourite haunt for ticks. It wasn't there yesterday so must have come from today's walk. I was really surprised at how quickly the tick had grown

I thought the bill was very reasonable though - £3.64. 

They did keep referring to him as a "she" though - so perhaps someone else is going to get the rest of the bill sent to them :D

My wood is a hot bed for the little suckers.. Ive found Tea Tree lotion (pet formulation) has greatly reduced.. in fact irradicated, any tick appearances on my two. I just swipe their faces and legs once or twice a week with it. In fact I dont think the Sibe has ever had a tick but the Eurasier (little forager) seems to have a 'Me casa Su casa! welcome all!" sign on her back only legible to ticks, slugs and woodlice :rolleyes: the Tea tree soon put a stop to the creepy crawly free loaders ;)

£3.64!  Bargain!  It costs me £27 every time we set foot in the surgery just for the consultation  

Poor Harley :(  Ticks are nasty little beggers.  Hope his eye is better soon.

Poor Harley, give him a big, gentle hug. What a nasty place to get one.

About the girly thing, my golden is called she all the time too. He looks so masculine to me but I think goldens are just pretty to most folks.

Awww - ouch! Poor Harley! My friends bichon got one millimetres from her eye at Windsor ten minutes before she was due in the ring!

I have been lucky two only seen one on one of mine  once (1989, not even the Elkhounds but my first dog) and one on a dog visiting (last year) who had just been frontlined a few days before coming back from Holland, so so much for timing of ticks and tapeworm treatment.

The Frontlining before the visiting dog's return would have removed any ticks he had at that time and which could have been carrying diseases (notably babeosis) quite common on the continent but not found in the UK. The tick you found was most likely picked up over here. Frontline isn't a preventative, just a treatment. :)

Yep but this was 48 hours after he was treated, so it shoudl ahve killed it.

How have you managed to avoid them?? Duibh managed to get loads from the garden of someone's house about 2 months ago, he had a beard of them! And he's had them before from Scotland, and even from local walks here which is not meant to be a tick area!! (Dorain seems to be less tick attractive - or possibly isn't as bad for sticking his nose in everything :D - he got loads on his face once in the Lakes, and I found one crawling round his head this spring looking for a home...)

Harley, hope your poor dog's eye is better now, that must be a HORRIBLE place to have a tick. :(

He is fine now thank you - the swelling took a few days to go down but is back to normal now. It was the fifth or sixth tick he has had this summer but all the others were in less vulnerable areas :)
