Topic Dog Boards / Health / Fishy smell..............???

Could this be Misty's anal glands????  Noticed this smell when she was cleaning herself (whilst trying to sit on my lap ) and it was quite a revolting smell (that is the only way I can describe it!:p).

I've checked her over and no discharge or anything else untowards.  She could possibly be due a season soonish (first season was 27 December and lasted for 21 days ish) could this also be a factor?
:)

Sounds like it could be anal glands ...

Yep, sounds just like full anal glands. Horrid smell, isn't it? Your best bet is to book an appointment at the vet to have them emptied. If you ask the vet to teach you how to do it it'll not only save you time and money but the vet will most likely be delighted - it's a job they hate doing too!

Thought it might be

Just a quick Q though.  Why do some dogs need help emptying them and others dont??  Or do all dogs need them emptied by someone at some point in their lives?  Is it down to anything in particular, ie diet etc or just one of those things.

Yes JG, the smell made me retch last night!  Decided today that I couldn't be a vet ;) :D :D LOL

I've read somewhere that 1 weetabix every morning can help - never tried it as so far (touch wood) my dogs have been ok!

Also a raw diet is supposed to help prevent it too!  But if you don't do raw try the weetabix!

Better than Weetabix is a spoonful of bran soaked added to the food(depends on the size of the dog the bigger the dog the bigger the spoon ;-) )

On the agility forum recently they were talking about anal glands, someone said bran and it was shot down as bran apparently inhibits the uptake of some vitamins? I don't really know but the safer option would be some nice raw meaty bones  :)

I think they are getting confused.  Bran is not recommended for very young children as it may fill them up and prevent them eating enough of the foods containing a variety of vitamins.

Funny I  was told about the bran by a vet who has had cavaliers forever & always used it to good effect & no problems

Some dogs will never need them doing, others (even fed on the same diet) will need them doing every few weeks. There are several factors. It can be dietary-related (stools that are too small or too soft won't put pressure on the glands to empty them naturally) or it can be the shape of the individual dog - the position of the glands can be mere millimetres away from the 'ideal' and they'll block more easily. The exit can be narrower than usual. Lack of liquid in the diet is also thought to be contributory.

It could also be a urinary tract infection. My last golden had a nasty UTI and the only sign was a really nasty fishy smell, and being a long haired dog meant that when she weed the smell then would 'hang around' and I used to have to give her a wash down below to get rid of it. It may be worth checking it out with the vet. From my experience they tend to shuffle their bottom along the floor when their anal glands are full

Scooting sometimes happens with full anal glands, but can't be relied upon as a symptom. The first I knew that one of mine had a problem was the development during one morning of the swelling of a gland, which burst before we got to the vet that same day. She'd shown no signs of discomfort at all - no licking, no scooting, no nothing.

My vet showed me how to empty anal glans happily gave me the rubber glove, I have to admit I was apprehensive at first but once you do it a couple of times you get the hang of it.Only thing is as JG says, the position of them my female is great to do  my male not as easy, so he goes to the vet...
