Hi, we are back in the UK at the end of July and we can't take our little boy with us. (dog that resides with our hosts hates other dogs and our boy gets very very car sick!) I have booked him into kennels for the week that we are away from home with the animal shelter run kennels over here. I wanted to arrange house sitters etc but we were unable to. My question is that we get back then 3 weeks later we are away again for 2 weeks and we will have to kennel him again!!!
I am really worried about him, but on the other hand i can't cancel our holiday or our trip to see family. (we hadn't planned on getting our boy this year or we would have ensured we just had our holidays at home!)
He will be about 5 and a half months the first time then 6 months the next time, is there anything we can do to make it easier for him? I have never had to kennel a dog before as we always had family around to help with our staffie and she didn't get car sick!
Whilst she is a nice lady we wouldn't go back to her and he wasn't really her dog as such he was a dog from a bitch she had lent someone on breeding terms!! Also she lives in the UK and he is a very bad traveller! (the boat journeys from here can be quite rough!)
If there was a way round it trust me i would take it not that i don't think that kennels have their place but we would rather not kennel him at such a young age or at all if we could take him with us!
If you can manage the travel sickness then you could take him with you and Kennel him where you are staying. We did this when we took our girl away at 5 months. That way we could take her out with us all day then back to the kennels at night as where we were staying didn't allow dogs. It worked out really well and although we would rather have had dogs with us it did mean we could go places dogless on a couple of days too and leave them in the kennels. I must admit I think all dogs should be able to be kennelled, we had one who couldn't (fear aggression) and she was so difficult to manage if you needed to leave her for any reason.
Thanks thats an idea although he gets very very sick in the car on the 5 minute drive to training so not sure how he would cope with the 3 hour boat journey then straight after a 3 hour car journey?
Maybe i'm just worrying without reason, i know they will look after him they are the animal shelter so they love animals
