My girl was mated three weeks ago, four days of good ties.

I have been trying to just get on with day to day as last time we had her mated I kept examining her thinking she MUST be pregnant but in the end she had a false pregnancy! (old thread).

Now for the last couple of days we have had what I can only assume to be morning sickness, off her food especially her complete biscuits.
I hand fed her today (steak) and she ate a little.
But now she has started weeing in the house? twice in my lounge while I took the kids to school and this evening while I am watching TV she got up walked out to the back porch and peed everywhere!
I would like to know if this has happened to any other bitch that may be 3 to 4 weeks pregnant, she has good colour in her gums so it doesn't seem to be an illness, but I am worried as she seems so quite?
My last bitch I mated and who had 6 pups did not have any morning sickness, did not pee in the house and was such a happy soul right up to labour.

Re the peeing, it may be that she has cystitis?  very often that's the first sign, losing their housetraining ;)    Afraid I can't comment on the Pregnancy question tho, they can have sickness if they have a false pregnancy too :(  It's so difficult waiting to know - and they like to keep it a secret :rolleyes:

Some of my bitches do wee more during the season and whilst pregnant.  One of my girls was always sick throughout her pregnancy but was a fantastic mother.  As we always say any worries see your vet.

Thanks, Just spoken to my Mentor and will monitor her.
She is not peeing little and often though, and there is no unsual colour to her wee.  It is just a HUGE amount of pee!!
Just checked her over and she has a clear discharge, I am going to bath her knickers tomorrow as they are a bit damp.
Will also take a wee sample and get the vet to check it out.

UPDATE:
Just phoned vets to make an emergency appt for my girl :(

She weed again last night in the house, HUGE puddle.
THis morning she is drinking lots, not eaten.
Her back end is soaking wet, wiped her with a white tissue and she has what I can only discribe as a light brown discharge :(
I am so worried, waiting for my husband to come home and take us to the vets, he wont be long,,,,,,,,,,

Excessive drinking and peeing in a bitch after a season should always "ring a bell". It can be the first signs of pyometra.
Hopefully not this time, though! Please let us know how your girl is doing.

UPDATE:
Just got home my girl has been admitted with Pyrometra.
She had a temp 39 was ultrasound and her uterus was full of puss.

waiting for vet to phone me tonight to tell me if he is going ahead with the spaying, as he was worried about her temperature and dehydration regarding putting her under tonight.

We are so worried, and depressed, with losing my boy on 17th May this year and now my girl becoming seriously ill.
EDIT:
and to top it all, I changed the dog insurance after finding out that the insurance company underwriters was slow and useless, and now because my new insurance Policy is not yet 14 days old they will not cover her illness.

Don't feel guilty!  This is not your fault!  It could happen to anyone.
Would your vet possibly set up a Direct Debit to pay this bill?  My vets are excellent and instead of insurance, I have a permanent DD with them.  I pay the smaller ammounts and the DD pays for anything larger.  Worth a try.

My girl is still at the vets.
her spaying went well today and she is making good recovery, however the vet is concerned about her high blood pressure so wants to keep an eye on her for a bit longer.
I did not sleep much at all last night, full of worry and shock as what has happened.
The vet is going to call me in the morning and let me know whether or not she can come home, will keep you posted. xx

EDIT:
My brain is working over time now, I need some advice on vaginal smears that most people have done before a mating to make sure there is no infections in the vagina.
My girl had this done before I mated her, but I did not use my vet I used another laboratory and want to know what a normal smear result would look like and a bad one.
If anyone could hlep me then please ever PM me or post thank you.
I am not wanting to point any fingers and blame anyone for what has happened as I have learnt alot from the internet about Pyometra, but I just want to check her smear result, to be sure. x

Good to hear everything went well.
I know a normal smear test shows a variety of bacteria, which is normal in a healthy bitch. An abnormal test, indicating an infection, would show an increase of a certain kind. For example e coli. I think you'd need help from your vet in interpreting a smear test, or from someone here on CD with more knowledge than me. I understand your concern, but it's possible the infection was caused by the matings, not something that was already there.

The interpretation of the bacteria on the swab is generally done by the lab for the vet and they will spell it out, what is abnormal, which antibiotics they are sensitive to etc. 
As the other poster says infection is a risk of mating so a clear swab prior to that is not a guarantee.  Incidentally, as the mating is such a prime suspect in the cause of the infection is unlikely your insurance would have covered this anyway as obstetric emergencies are excluded by the majority of policies.

So could it be the stud dog that has contributed to the infection?

Well possibly but really the act of mating can force bacteria that is no more than the natural flora and fauna of the vagina up through the cervix where there is not the same defence mechanism (the vagina is acidic and is self cleaning in that the secretions constantly wash stray bodies outwards) for maintaining the correct balance and they can proliferate unchecked so there is not necessarily any "culprit" it is just a risk of mating.

MY GIRL IS HOME!

Just got back from vets, she seems still quite tired, bless her, hasnt eaten yet so will encourage her with her faviourites!
She is on medication Antibiotics and Anti Inflammatries (sp).
Will be taking her back to the vets on Tuesday and then again a week Wednesday, we are just so please she is home.
I have made a bed for her in my kitchen with the puppy run around her so that she can have peace and quiet from the other dogs.

Would still appreciate some advice on vaginal smears please. xx

Can anyone suggest to me how I can make my girl more comfortable???
She not eating much at all, and the medication she has is Metacam that has to go into her food once a day to help with the pain and is an anti Inflammatray (sp).
The thing is she keeps whimpering and I feel so upset that my dog is in pain.
Does anyone know if I can give her the Metacam straight to her in her mouth? she seems to be eating around the food that the medicine is on.
Or is there anything else I can do or give her to ease the pain?

I have given metacam straight into the mouth before (with some tasty food nearby to give afterwards as, if the smell is anything to go by, I can't imagine that it tastes too pleasant!). I've since found that my dog will eat it if I mix it with a small bowl of grated cheese. It is ok to give it into the mouth though if that is what it takes - my vet said that with cats they usually won't touch any food with it in at all.

I don't like giving medications, but I have to say that Metacam is brilliant and I have found that it works within only an hour or two (my dog has had a couple of bad paw and leg injuries in the past). She really shouldn't need anything else if you can get a dose down her. Good luck!

You could try putting the tablet in a cream cheese triangle, mine will take anything that way :)

As to the discomfort, TLC and time is all you can do :)

Metacam's a liquid - not sure why they can't make it as tablets as the taste of the liquid can make it very tricky to get them to take it! My dog refused bowls of tripe and all kinds of tasty stuff when he sniffed a dose of metacam in there :rolleyes: The grated cheese trick works great though :P

Ahhhh, the cheese would be a bit difficult then :( As you can see, I have never used this, when my girl was spayed, the painkillers/anti inflam was in tablet form.

Yes, Metacam can be syringed straight into the mouth as long as you give titbits to eat at the same time. It does need to be taken with food, but it's a palatable medicine with a honey flavour.

I have never given metacam in food, just by syringe straight in the mouth.

thank you for your posts, I did actually phone the duty vet last night as where the stitches are on my girl (length about 9inch!) it was leaking in the middle with what looked like blood.  The vet assured me that a little serum leakage can be normal as long as there was not loads of it, so I am keeping a close eye on her, it seems to have stopped at the moment.
I asked him about the Metacam and he did say I could give it by mouth, but as some of CD have said as long as it is with some food after xx
She seems a bit better this morning, still whimpering and seems to find it a bit uncomforable to walk as she seems to limp a little on her back leg.  I have used the panels from the puppy run to give her her own space and so she doesn't move around too much, bless her. xx

Does it ever stop.
Took my girl back to vets today to have her stitches removed after her spay and they tested her blood pressure as it was high when she was admitted, and it is still high 180 instead of 160.
They have now taken bloods and are testing for cushioning disease, kidneys etc. I feel so depressed, does anyone know any more about high blood pressures etc:
