Topic Other Boards / Foo / Aaaargh!! What are the chances...?

The ever accident-prone Shay sustained a cut to his paw yesterday morning.  He is obviously in some pain when he bears weight on it but he can't shift his weight on to his other back leg because of his arthritis.  Poor boy is miserable :( I've never known him not to want to go for a walk, even after he had his surgery last year but he hasn't wanted to go out yesterday or today.  So, I took Lola out alone this morning.  Had our usual walk - quite uneventful, just playing fetch with her ball and seeking out fresh fox poo to roll in   Put her on the lead to bring her home and she started to lick at her front left paw.  I lifted her paw to check it assuming that she had a little stone trapped between the pads as often happens but no, she has a cut on her paw too!! What are the chances?

So, any ideas how to keep the two invalids amused until they are fit to go for proper walks again?  Also, any tips on helping the pads to heal?  Neither cut is terribly serious and I've been bathing them with salt water thus far.

Bathing in salt water is what vets usually recommend, it's what was suggested for a staffy at work that had a loopy morning and shredded the underside of all her front claws and took the entire casing off one of them. She healed very quickly just with warm salt water baths, not that she found them fun :D

She was miserable for a couple of days too, very sore on her front feet and I carried her back from her walks a couple of times.

Oh dear :( Poor Shay and Lola :(

I am sure it won't take too long to heal but keeping the wounds dry and clean will help

poor pups! Bu has cut his paw a few times-i tend to wash with boiled salty water, and i have some of those mikki boots-i bung one of them on, then just take them both out on a road walk for long enough for them to do their business. The boot keeps the muck out and keeps the wound dry, and its slightly padded too, so probably makes walking on hard surfaces more bearable. Aside of that, a play in the garden on the grass with boot and a tennis ball normally does the trick, but then my two are easily amused-especially if you give them a sock!

Didn't have ANY luck whatsoever with the Mikki boot, it would be off within minutes of putting it on Harris when he cut his pad at the start of the year. I was redressing it every day for about 2 weeks and found the best thing in the end was antiseptic wound powder from the pet shop, sprinkled on twice daily and generally stopping him licking it - hahaha!
Good luck!

I tried to fashion a proective boot last time Shay cut his paw about 18 months ago.  He wasn't happy and, when he couldn't get it off himself, he recruited Lola to help

They're both on the mend now.  Shay is much more mobile and is managing very short trips out to go to the toilet (he simply won't 'go' in the garden...ever).  Lola is still bouncing about like a loon and wanting to chase her ball and is not letting a pronounced limp slow her down at all.  I think she is missing the 'docile' gene that Newfies are supposed to have  :D  You should see how fast they can move, sore paws or and all, when they see me coming with the yellow bowl with the salt water in and cotton pads :D :D

Poor Shay and Lola. Milo cut his paw a couple months ago while haring through the river and he was fine in a few days. I was surprised at how quickly it healed. I kept him in for a couple days then took him to the beach and let him swim. I hope they're back on their paws soon.
