Topic Other Boards / Foo / Remember Mollie/School etc? Can you help?

For those who remember Mollies problems at school - a short update for you. We had another incident and that accompanied with the one before provoked a few sessions with the school nurse re Mollie not eating etc. She's been really helpful (she's a bit of a therapist) and we have discovered that Mollies reactions (over the top) to what are really minor incidents are whats blowing the whole thing out of proportion (still with me?).

You see, Mollie has a risk taker personality. Loves to scare herself - scary rides, scary films etc. However, this also means she is constantly on the defensive - bit of a flight ot fight personality. So, again, a quick version: scary films, quad bikes, jumping horses - all stopped - in an effort to get her to relax and calm down - and let things go over her head.

Sooo - the upshot of this is that I am looking for a relaxation CD for her to listen to when she goes to bed to help her sleep and keep her calm..

Any recommendations for one for a 13 year old?

I remember your posts about the eating.  I'm glad that she has been talking to someone about it and you seem to have made some headway by identifying some of her reactions etc.

Not sure if this will help or this one but will keep looking though.

Sorry to hear that the problems are still ongoing.  It does sound like you're dealing with them very well though :)

I'm not sure whether you want a spoken word CD or a music one but if it's the latter then I can recommend Phil Thornton.  He has loads of CDs on the market.  It's all music (no singing) and it's based around world music so there's tribal ones, American Indian ones, Celtic ones, etc.  The one that would probably most appeal to your daughter is called 'Solstice'.  I have his whole collection and I use them all as relaxation backgrounds for clients.

I remember reading Jonathan Livingstone Seagull at about that age. Philosophical and calming, together some lovely ocean sounds........So long as she has no problems with water and bed.

I  dont know about cd's but it did occur to me that she might benefit from Pilates classes if they run them at the local sports centre....

they teach you to relax...

best wishes

I remember your original post :)

You say that Mollie has a risk taking personality so perhaps it might help if she had one area where controlled risk taking was provided for in order to let that side of her personality be catered for but, in addition, provide the relaxation encouragement in order to balance it out.

Obviously you know your daughter better than anyone :) but it may be that, for her, she does need a little bit of risk in her life. If you could find a compromise where she feels that her love of risk taking is fulfilled - but as calculated risk not "devil may care" risk she might find it an outlet for that side of her personality. My own worry in that situation would be that, if she doesn't take any risks at all, she might just decide to take one huge risk that could have disastrous consequences.

Not convinced that I have expressed that very well but, hopefully, you will get the gist of my thinking :)
