Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Variety ? herring roe
- By ChinaBlue [gb] Date 04.07.07 08:02 UTC
Any reason I shouldn't feed a little herring roe in my dogs very varied diet? It's very cheap and must be quite nutritious I would have thought. I was thinking about putting into their frozen kongs

Kat, just noticed no-one has replied to this, maybe like me no-one knows, but, I don't think it would do any harm!

I didn't reply because I have no idea - but I feed my dog raw fish so would imagine that it would be ok. Hopefully someone else will know for certain :)

Yes, I feed raw fish complete with heads, tails and whatever is inside so thought it would be ok :)

I have friends in BC Canada who own have a spawn on Kelp fisherie (they grow Herring roe on kelp sea weed and farm it)
Their dogs (Malamutes) get fresh roe and Ive known them for 15 years.
A tip I picked up from them (as often the roe we get over here has been shipped and stored in Brine) is To test the salinity level, simply taste the roe or place it between your teeth and inhale a bit of air through the little egg.Rinse thoroughly with water.
HTH :)
(I'll email them and see if I can get nutritional info from them for you)

Thanks Huskygal

I have to say I don't fancy tasting it or putting it between my teeth - the thought of any kind of roe turns my stomach! Might get OH to try though, although he's more squeamish than I am  It is for sale on the fresh fish counter, not tinned or packaged in any way, but I hadn't thought of the brine bit. Really interested about the nutritional side, not that I would be feeding huge quantities, but imagine it would be a novel kong ingredint.
