Where do I start! :D

on tuesday when I picked my eldest son from school, he fell out a tree, got rushed to hospital, x rays showed he had a hair line fracture on T6 spinal bone (?) so was told to lay flat on his back for the rest of the day and night, he got bored! had to stay in hospital with him, then wednesday morning he was discharged with instructions for him not to run about jump or play any sports etc: for the next 6 weeks, which runs into our weeks holiday where we normally go swimming, horse riding and visit a leisure park!
How can you tell a 7 year old child this when he feels ok in himself! so keep nagging him when he gets to excited :D
Got to take him back to the hospital on Thursday for more x rays to see if his back is healing, school has been notified and have been given strict instructions not to let him out at playtimes to avoid damage, its his last three weeks at school before he joins the Juniors and I don't want him to miss out on the leaving concerts etc: doctors says it ok for him to go back on Monday but but has to take it easy.

Then today the pup I was looking after while owners on holiday has now gone home :( missing him already and so are the other dogs.

On the good side, my OH took his work van all the way up to stoke on trent as it was his last day with his company, he had to get the train back down which took him about 5 hours! Don't know why his work mate that lives down the road could have not taken the van back for him tomorrow as he is going up to the office for a training thing and HE could of got the train back! :D
He starts his new job on Monday, tie and suit job, company car, laptop and mobile so we are all thrilled! (and its more money! )

Another week like this an I am going to throw in the towel!

Well done to OH for getting himself a good job and I hope it all goes well for him and of course, your son.

right guys need input!
After putting this thread on here I have been looking at the internet trying to learn more about the T6 part of the spine and what it means to have a hairline fracture.
Now I am getting worried about my sons back, he is acting as normal, no pain, and larking around like a 7 year old does but I am still nervous...
some of the reports I have found about the T6 on the spine is that the spinal cord at that area controls things like the stomach etc;
I am nervous about sending him back to school, letting him continue to move around as normal, some of the cases I have read have said they have had to wear a brace to keep them from damaging the fracture even more, my sons did not get anything from the Hospital he was just discharged with an follow up appt for Thursday for more x rays and that he had to avoid sports etc for 6 weeks.

If by any chance there are any CD here that have experience in this or have had a similar problem with a hair line fracture to the spine, then please help me with some advice!

My OH had a very bad smash on his motorbike 2 Christmas's ago and broke his back in 8 places If your just a little bit worried about your son, then keep him off school until your happy. I know how you feel and it's a real worry. Things can easily go wrong with the back and spine and it's not like a broken limb. Remember though that young kids are quite rubbery and bones repair almost overnight and sometimes breaks are not even noticed in kids. The good thing to remember is if it's a hairline crack, rather than a break, the spinal cord will continue to be protected.

I fractured a vertabrae in my teens - it was a 'T' one, but not sure if it was number 6 though. It was a hirline fracture, the same as your sons. I was told pretty much the same as you, no sports  and also no heavy lifting, and I had to try not to twist at the waist too much. It didn't cause me pain at all, and after about 8 weeks I was given the all clear to start easing back into exercise again.

I didn't need a brace or anything like that either. It might be worth a word with the school to see if they can supervise playground games etc, in case he's one to 'rough and tumble' with his mates.

Hi Thanks Claire, I feel a bit easier now! :D I did go into panic mode!!!
He went to school today, spoke to school teacher and they are keeping him in at break times and lunchtimes, just wished I lived closer to the dame school so that I could bring him home for lunch as he said it was 'well boring' sitting around in the school office while his friends played!
He says his back hurts a little, not enough to stop him from bending to do shoe laces up or to reach for the Tv Control!!
We have more x rays on thursday so I am hoping that things are going to look better and that we have a good Holiday in South Devon in 3 weeks time! :D
He also toy skelington (sp) into school to show his teacher where his T6 bone was and where his back hurt.
