does anyone know how to track down where an ip number comes from?:confused:

hubby works in IT and said you can but you can only track it to country or city but not house, he said theres a web site that you can do it on but he cant remeber name.
You could try google to find name of website.

Unfortunately I think it's quite hard.  I know the police tried to get the details of one at one point but I don't think they found out who it beloned to.

There is whois lookup for IP addresses here. Unlikely you will get a house number though. Many ISPs use proxy servers so everyone has the same IP and not many give you fixed IP addresses. It can provide useful information sometimes.

Depends alot really.

If it's from an e-mail or message left on a guest book then your internet provider will be able to track down the specific internet connect it was sent from.

If you want to trace it yourself it's alot harder.

Some IT geeks can track down every fine detail with the right knowledge....boyfriend once had to prove it to me and I was gobsmacked he managed to get the account details for our webspace which included contact details.  (yes I am calling boyfriend an IT Geek! :D )
