I had Junior at the dentist for his 3year rabbie shot and exam- we could see something around his tooth she figured tarter and well he wouldn't really let her look. When I got home I got a baby tooth brush and cleaned his teeth which he does have tarter not lots but it was dog rope rapped around and a baby tooth growing with an adult tooth- 2 are like that... Since I got him more comfortable with me sticking my fingers in his mouth and brushing (I need a finger brush for dogs) I found that one of his molars on the top is rotted- I wondered why his breath stunk now I know why.... My vet is not back till July 3rd and he is eating have been keeping an eye on him and he still kinda chews his bones and plays with the tug rope- I was told 3-5 hundred for scaling and teeth pulling depending, Iam sure he need about 3-4 teeth pulled for sure... Now do you think they can just pull the teeth without scaling them to bring the price down? I left a message for my vet to call me back and I will be calling her on the 3rd- Junior seems all fine in himself not acting outta the ordinary- just wondering how much this maybe hurting him :( Him and then our car (posted on idle chat) I have no idea what Iam gonna do and how Iam gonna do this- but I know I gotta get his mouth done and we need another car for sure grrrr!!! :( Do you think he should be fine as long as he seems fine? Iam just worried about him getting infected- besides the very bad breath and a rotted tooth- its rotted in the middle... Junior is now 7years old and he weighs 25 pounds-

Thank you
Shelly

If his teeth are that bad you must just bite the bullet and get a dental done. He'll need a GA anyway, to scale or extract, so that's immaterial. They'll scale what can stay and extract what can't be saved. Remember that decayed teeth can cause blood infections that can affect the heart as well as other organs, causing serious health problems.

I know for sure one is rotting cause it smells.... oooh for sure Iam taking him in, calling my vet on July 3rd when she is back- she's the only one I trust. If Junior acts out of the ordinary then of course will get him in sooner with someone else... He still eats his hard food and Iam now just softening it every night just to make sure he gets his fill, he always nibbles threw out the day since food is always available to my dogs....

Is there any signs besides not eating to know if it is really hurting him? So far he still acts like Junior :)

Thank you for the reply :)

I've just had dentals done on both my dogs and it cost around £200 per dog - they didnt require any extractions though. I think the bulk of the cost though is the anaesthetic and day patient care.

Here's hoping it doesn't cost too much- my other 3 their teeth look ok- It was nice to see him chewing on a bone yesterday :) I was told too the anaesthetic would be what cost the most- think its like 15 dollars to pull a tooth depending on whats all involved and Iam assuming the rotten one will cost more...

Gosh, that is cheap.  It cost me £189.00  (not sure what that is in dollars) to have one tooth extracted from my dog including anesthetic.

Wow!  My old dog had to have some teeth out and the rest all cleaned up last year, under general - so I was expecting quite a big bill!  Came to £45!

Dollface, just to tell you I see a lot of people with very bad teeth, and they aren't all in agony, dont worry too much about the pain level as I am sure if it was really bad he would be rubbing his face and not eating atall. If this tooth has decayed slowly it may have been sensitive off and on,but as said above, best to get it sorted,my peg had a tooth taken out in April because it was loose(I think play fighting with our other dog),but I didnt even know and she never showed any sign of discomfort.

He doesn't seem to be in any pain- He was chewing his bone lastnight going like 90 lol but I do soften about 2 cups of dogfood once a day just to make sure he eats- he has no problem eating his hard food but I just wanna make sure he is getting what he needs- I think he should be fine till my vet is back- if not then yup will be running him in...

Thank you

Who is your vet?  Mine cost £189 for one tooth pulling.

I have 3 dogs, an English Springer, Golden Retriever and an old rescued greyhound.  Whereas the 2 male dogs (springer and Retriever) have lovely teeth, the greyhound came with terrible teeth and bad breath to match.  Most of her teeth have dropped out but recently we had to rush her to the vet as a back tooth had broken off and the root was stuck in her gum causing it to spurt blood.   The vet removed the root and she is now o.k.  Even when the tooth broke off and blood was spurting out she was not in pain.  She was more upset at having to miss her dinner and stay at the vets.

If your dog is in pain, he will let you know either by crying or becoming aggressive.  If he has a rotten tooth, then it must be removed.  As for plaque, you can buy some powder from the vet that you sprinkle on the food to reduce plaque.  Takes a while but does seem to work.

I bought a doggy toothbrush- it comes with a toothbrush with 2 different sizes at each end and a finger one and poultry toothpaste- couldn't find any other flavour besides original- think I will be brushing some teeth... They say its dishwasher safe eeeew- would I just run it under hot water to clean it? Have never brushed teeth b4, i have flossed Junior's teeth lol and cleaned with a toothpick as well to get some spots thats how i found the rotten one...

He does not seem to be in any pain at all- still crunches his hard food and chews on bones all the same- my vet will be back on the 3rd, plus I gotta see whats up with another vehicle as well cause I have no transport be kinda hard on a bike lol

I'll let you know whats up when i talk to her- am hoping it don't come to no 500 hundred dollars  Thank goodness the other 3 have good teeth...

Thanks again :)
