Hi
I was at my Drs a while ago about getting something to help me lose weight. She mentioned a tablet that worked but she couldnt give it to me as it I couldnt get it on the NHS. She also refered me to a clinic that would be able to prescribe it but the clinic will only take on anarexics. She adviced me to join a slimming club I have done this and have lost a bit but I am finding it difficult and have reached a plateau. Getting really depressed with it all so need a boost.
I am willing to pay for the tablet if it helps. I didnt think to say to the Dr at the time. Does anyone know the name of it? I want to read up on it and see if it will help me before I go back.
I do have a real problem here so please dont tell me to eat healthy and get more exercise. If it was that easy I would be a size 10.
Thanks in advance

Hi
Have you had your thyroid levels checked out by the Doctor ? I don't understand why the doctor would send you to a clinic that only deals with Anorexics

Why not ask to eb refered to a Dietician at your local hospital as they maybe able to give you a diet plan to follow ?
How have the slimming club been with support for you as if you have been loosing weight then you can do it but may need some more support to carry on and try and loose some more ?
It is hard and often seems like a big mountain to climb but with ther ight support and encouragement I am sure you could carry on :)

The slimmimg tablets prescribed that I have knowledge of are xenacal and Reductil. The first expels fat out of your diet, so if you eat anything fatty you know about it ;) and clears 30% (I think thats the figure) anyway. You go to the loo a lot in the begining, which does ease off once your diet changes, but don't slip up :D reductil works on your brain to make you think you feel full after eating a smaller amount. it was first used as an antidepresant, weight loss was a side effect. It can raise your blood presure, so you need to be monitored whilst on it, and I think the longest period is 12 mths. Both are expensive. You could ask about them, they are prescribed in obese cases. I did hear that another anti obesity drug was being developed, maybe this is what she is refering too.
In all honesty, i would do as suggested, make sure there is no other reason you are not losing the weight, such as thyroid, if not then go back to the meetings and get their support. They know how to deal with the awful 'sticking' stage, and can help. try not to weight yourself to often, and keep a food diary. That way, you may be able to identify any little problems. Sometimes, a little more exercise helps speed up the metabolism, maybe try that?
I do know what you are going through, I have a weight problem I'm not slim, losing weight is the hardest thing, then keeping it off is another! Age makes a difference too, I don't know what your age is but I'm a more mature lady, and it does get harder then. especially if you have yo yo dieted in the past. Just wish you all the best.

Plateaus are hard, they can really frustrate you and make you think why bother. I can't help with the diet pills but I can tell you two tips my personal trainer told me (not rich, just exchanged PT for a break in my lodgers rent :-D) Eating less doesn't always help, eating smarter does. Eating low fat often ends up in a unbalanced diet that's heavily weighted towards carbohydrates. Eating a balanced diet with plenty of protein really works. Good old fashioned meat and two veg is ideal.
Second tip was more weight training not more aerobics. My sister was on a diet from the time she was 8; with low thyroid and little muscle tone she only needed to look at a piece of food to gain weight. All the aerobics in the world wasn't helping. I prodded her long enough and she finally started doing some weight training. She looks like Olive Oyl now and eats more than she ever has. Pretty good for 47. Muscle uses far more calories at rest so your metabolism increases.
It is really hard but if you can stick with it you will punch through that plateau in a month or two and start losing again. I've never met anyone who really had success with pills. If they worked there wouldn't be any obese people around. Good luck, love yourself, feel good, you'll get there!

I've tried both types... Reductil and Xenacal and... I wouldn't bother! Yes, they helped initially and yes I lost weight (more from the appetite suppresant Reductil to be honest) BUT you can't stay on them for long and as soon as you're off them the weight piles back on :( I too have a problem, a reason for being like I am but really a lifestylae change is the ONLY way to keep weight off for good ;)
And you can get the tablets on the NHS - or we can in my area - but you have to meet criteria. A friend got hers privately and came to the same conclusion as me.

Hi
It wasnt Reductil or Xenixcal she was talking about as I know they precribe them. I think I have had both over the years, seen the dietition and even had stomach stapled nothing worked. she said it was a new one and they couldnt prescribe it. Might have to go back and ask.
I am getting no support from my diet class. Unfortuntly the leader is only interested if you are losing. I cant go to another class as it is either to far or when I am working.
I need a boost to help my weight loss. Then I will be able to walk further and take up swimming again. I do walk a lot with the dogs but I have terrible artheritis and some days in agony losing weight will help this to.
Thanks

I do sympathise! My arthritis isn't bad enough yet to stop me doing what I want, although it tells me of afterwards ;) Sorry that the diet class isn't working either - I'm sure some people shouldn't be allowed near these classes let alone run them! Haven't heard of these other tablets I'm afraid - and not sure I want to! I wish you well in your quest :)

If your'e
really desperate you could try 'diet source' from Holland & Barrat. Its a killer, and I hate it, and I've only been on it four days :( But this is the first time on a diet that I haven't even been the
teeniest bit tempted to eat the things I'm not allowed. Be warned though the pills are huge capsules and look like you should 'insert' them instead of swallowing them ;) :D

tell me more missie, how does that work?
You have been through the works. Are they really sure there is no underlying condition that is not helping? I must admit I don't like pills and potions, as someone has already said, once you stop them, time goes by and the weight returns, much like a crash diet. water arobics is fantastic for artheritis, it does loosen up the joints and makes them feel better, well thats what I found anyway. (Osteo A) Non weight bearing exercise gets the joints moving, and glucosamine helps too, and codliver/fish oils. With a good trainer, weights would be possible. When you are in less pain, you will feel better in yourself and more motivated.
How about an on line diet club? Not had anything to do with them, has anyone else here? failing all this, a good NHS dietition is as good a choice as anything. If you need support.....well I think this place is as good as anywhere :D

Hi
What does it actually do and what do you get for your money, It doesnt give you much information. Do you think it works and what happends when the month is up
Loads of questions lol
Wendy
I would listen to those who have tried pills and found it really didn't work longterm, trouble is you have to go back to eating again, you can't live on any pill to flush out your body I believe there are medical repecussions in doing so, you have to ask if there truly was a miracle pill, everyone would be slim wouldn't they? No matter what it cost, people would be taking out bank loans as with cosmetic surgery and the thousands of diets and products out there would all be out of business.
Boring, Boring, Boring I know but a healthy diet and smaller portions is what keeps you healthy.
In my experience with my larger friends there is usually a medical reason behind it also.
One of my larger friends has recently just lost 9 stone on a diet, where all others have failed, she went on the lighterlife diet, I couldn't believe it when I saw her, after years of being heavy, she is now a size 12 she looks fantastic, but again I can't guarantee it is longterm.
Take a look on www.lighterlife.com you get support and they work with your doctor too, it may be worth a look. :-)

Extract from the first page of the booklet:
Quote:
If you've been looking for a program to help kick start your body, then get ready for the Diet Source. This new complete exercise, eating plan and supplementation kit will help you achieve your goals.
The Diet Source was designed to take the confusion and guesswork out of dieting by providing you with a simple, easy-to-follow approach. Precise directions of when and how to take each supplement are provided, along side recommended eating and exercise guidelines.
Key ingredients are included in our formulas to help you achieve your diet goals. Chromium helps to support sugar metabolism within the body, while Caffeine, provided by the herbs Guarana, Cola, and Green Teas, will help to support your energy levels. L-Carnitine assists the breakdown of fats in cells to produce energy, and Potassium plays a role in maintaining fluid and electralyte balance.
The Diet Source doesn't just throw all of these important components at you in one pill, it provides you with adequate daily amounts of these nutrients in combination with healthy eating and exercise guidelines.
It all starts before your first meal of the day. Before breakfast, consume the supplements as directed to help jump-start your morning. Then enjoy the healthy recommended meal, which provides a balance of complex carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
The DS supplementation helps to provide you with the confidence to stick with a nutritious eating plan.Unquote
It also gives you the warning that you should consult your doctor before starting especially if you are taking medication, and is not intended for use by pregnant or nursing women.
Some of the ingredients include:
a combination of herbs and nutrients.
Chromium - a trace mineral which plays a role in sugar metabolism.
L-Carnitine
Caffeine found in:
Green tea
Guarana &
Cola
Oat bran and other fibre-containing ingredients
Potassium -
CLA - a naturally occurring Fatty Acid found in a number of foods
The booklet is quite informative and contains far too much info to print on here. 20 recipes included. Exercise plans, foods to avoid etc etc
And you have to drink galleons of water!
The first two weeks are like a detox - these will be the hardest for me. And also because there is caffeine in the supplements you have to be careful not to overdose so at the moment I am only having 2 coffees per day, morning and night, but drinking lots of water - which I thought I could never do as I don't DO water :) Only been on it four days and my energy levels today have just doubled! I haven't once craved for crisps or chocolate, biscuits or cakes etc
What will happen at the end of four weeks? I just don't know. But for now I am sticking to it, for me its the kick start I need :)

Hi
that sounds like the kick start I need. What are the meals like is it normal food?
I know pills are not the long term answer but sometimes we need a boost that will help us and give us the confidence to carry on. I love swimming but at the moment I will not go even though I work in a leasure center. The thought of being seen in a swimming costume terriefies me but if I can lose a couple of stone I wont mind and plan to swim after work every day, Same with walking. I was also thinking about getting a bike and cycling to work but at the moment that just isnt possible. But a couple of stone down it would be. Then I would be doing more excercise and hopefully not need the pills. I know I have a long term problem but if I can get some help to kick start it why not.
Thanks
Wendy
Just be careful, thats all I'm saying. Did you say you had a tummy staple? is that still in place? You need to make sure anything like these tablets are safe to use because of the surgery you have already had. you need to be very careful with caffinne if you have high blood presure, or if you take any other medication, prescribed or not. Why not run them past your GP? I doubt the GP would recommend them, but she can say if they are safe for you to use.
I know what you mean about swimming cozzies

I always went to the ladies only sessions, and would sneak into the pool when no one was looking if at all possible. I didn't work there though, its different then I agree. But I would bet, being a leisure place, your work mates would be more than supportive if they knew the problems you are facing.
Anyway, i wish you the best. xx

>or if you take any other medication, prescribed or not. Why not run them past your GP?<
It does tell you to do that :) Wendy, if you do decide to do this, speak to your doctor first ok :)
The 4 supplements are called:
Thermolean, Bio cleanse, Hydro Balance with Potassium and Omega Lean
ingredients listed above
>I doubt the GP would recommend them<
Recommend them for Wendy? or for anyone in general?
Good luck in what ever you decide to do :)
doubt the GP would recommend them<
In general. GPs don't tend to like anything that appears to be a quick fix, or tablets they don't prescribe. Well, the ones I have come across anyway, they are for healthy eating or in obese cases the other prescribed drugs. Or, sending you to a dietition. :)

Ok :)
To be honest I've never talked to my doctor about my diet so I wouldn't know whether he would or not condone the pills. Well actually thats not true. A couple of years ago Doc asked me if I was eating a 'balanced' diet. I said yes of course I was, chips on one side of the plate, pie on the other ;)
I've never talked to my doctor about my diet so I wouldn't know whether he would or not condone the pills. This is the problem with the 'over the counter' stuff, people very often don't consult their GPs thinking because its 'over the counter' its safe. Not everyone knows that 'natural' medications can conflict badly with prescribed meds when its 'just' suppliments. A little example, the caffine in these slimming tabs would react to people taking warfarin. You also need to know your blood presure is Ok, and remains so. How long have these tabs been trialed for, what are the side effects? How long can they be safely taken for....There are an awful lot of tablets on ebay that say they promote weight loss. Slimming tablets have been round for years, I remember the ones that blocked drains!!!

and the Sam Fox recommended 'Tea' that was a huge scam. What also makes me smile with slimming tabs is that the instructions tell you to exercise more, and eat a low cal/low fat diet.....which would get the weight off anyway. ;) As someone has already said, if there was a pill made that could melt fat, people would be taking bank loans/remortgaging their homes for it! In fact, the NHS would possibly prescribe it to save the money spent on obese type health problems.:)
Anyone that is considering a weight loss program should have a health checkup, especially if the weight loss program is to be over a long time with a considerable loss. And consult their GP regarding this program, whatever that may be.
She also refered me to a clinic that would be able to prescribe it but the clinic will only take on anarexics.
Just wondered, did the clinic refuse to take you?
Just wondered if this
.....Rimonabant, also known as Acomplia, is the first drug to target a natural body system that governs a host of factors controlling appetite, weight, metabolism and energy use. is the drug you meant? (from the GP)
Found it on this link
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/health/article680833.ece ..... hope it helps :)
