I was giving my 11 yr old girl a tummy rub last night and found a lump about ½"-1" size in her tummy, level with her back legs. It doesn't move around and feels quite deep in her tummy, as if I am feeling just the tip of something, if you know what I mean! Now being no expert, I don't know if it is part of her normal anatomy or whether it's something that needs checking out. I don't want to go to the vets to be told it's a normal part of her body, but I know I haven't felt it before. She is in no pain when I feel her tummy, and otherwise is in good health for her age, other than a little arthritis. She was spayed 9yrs ago. Has anyone any thoughts? I will probably be ringing the vet anyway, but just wanted to see if anyone here had any ideas.

It could easily be a fatty lump, which is harmless. Best get it checked to put your mind at rest.

I bet you won't feel happy till you have had it checked....so go on, put your mind at rest and let us know the outcome :) Oldies get all sorts of lumps and bumps, but its best to get it checked out. Good Luck.

Is it on or around one of her teats ? if so it could be a mammary tumour.

I would get in checked what ever the answer is to this :)

Had Tara at the vets this evening, he thinks that it's a hernia. He doesn't want to put her through surgery at her age, so this is an educated guess, but if the lump gets bigger or if she is in obvious discomfort, we shall take her back to see him.

I'm a lot happier now, I couldn't rest until she'd been seen.

With all lumps it is best to get them checked out asap, as even if they are sinister, removed early they can result in complete cure or extend the dogs life to it's normal span.

My Friend recently found a not large lump on her 5 year old dogs side.  In fact it was a locally invasive carcinoma resulting in quite a large area being removed.

Now she just goes to have it checked every few months to check for regrowth, as it is the type if not already spread that is likely to reappear in same place.

My bitch had a mammary tumour at five and after removing the pea size lump it didn't reoccur for several years, the next time the whole gland was removed, and she lived to 13 1/2.
