Topic Other Boards / Foo / I'm getting a horse

I'm so excited as I have always had horses growing up but when I moved to England couldnt afford to bring any of them over. Bronwyn has started lessons and is really enjoying it and that gave me the kick start I needed to get back into it. I have private lessons booked for this weekend just so I can get back into it again, been a while since I been on a horse.
I phoned my uncle this morning(he keeps my horses) and when I go back in August we are going to pick a stallion for one of the mares, get her covered early next year and then fingers crossed. She is 15hands 3in TBx Connemara and is chestnut and a real beauty(I'll get some pictures when I go back in a few weeks). Her Great Grandmother was my first horse.
Anyone got any ideas? I was thinking an Irish Draught as I have always had a soft spot for them.
I spoke to the children about it last night and Bronwyn has already laid claim to it so looks like I will have to share.

I have just had a fab ID colt born to my ID mare by my friends ID stallion - he is stunning. PM if you'd like to see pics.

Connies are small ID's so that would probably work quite nicely. Or a good Connie stallion if you wanted something possibly a bit smaller :)

I suppose I need to remember that Bronwyn is going to ride it aswell and she is only 6 at the minute. She is really excited about it all and has started reading my books on horses which is fun as I have to explain what every other word means. She is booked in for a stable management course during the summer and has now joined the pony club.

:)

You could put her to a nice small TB for a small hack with a bit of bone. Very popular at the moment I gather :)

Hi Abbymum,

Lucky you getting a horse!! I'll try to pretend I haven't gone green :)

I've just started riding again after a break of 5 years - I'd dearly love another horse, but time/money will only allow occasional riding at the moment.

Personally I'd go for an ID, I love them, but if it's for your girl as well, perhaps a Connemara x, as they perhaps won't be quite so big.

You'll have to post pics so we can all see!

I think that we will go for an ID as my first pony was a connemara and she had her moments where you could have killed her cheeky mare. By the time the foal will be ready for riding Bronwyn will be 12-13 and will have been riding for 6-7yrs. I am sure my Uncle will be looking already so hopefully when I get home there will be a short list.
Not looking forward to this weekend as its been so long since I have been on a horse that I am going to really ache the next day.

Id go for the ID but pick a not too chunky one (the stallion i know, Raj is a BIG lad indeed...).

They have their moments though, on the cheeky front... that said a friend of mine is teaching her ID youngster some stuff at the moment and is happily hacking out doing ride n lead with the youngster from her mare (the mother of said 2 year old) so they CAN be extremely sensible.

Lovely beasties ID's :)

ID's are very sensible - but can take control of a situation, My ID mare isn't fond of cows, so we go past quite quickly, and only a bit made of barbed wire would stop her. But a nicer mare you could not choose to meet - very sensible and no-nonsense.

Cross wise - I'd go for a TB. TB x ID/Connie is my very favourite breed, with TB next and then ID. I have 2 TB's, 2 ID's, 2 ID x TB's, 1 ID x TB foal and 1 pure RID foal - I think I see a pattern forming :D

Are you talking about SU Raj? :)

I used a rather fab stallion to get my colt and he is just like his dad and I am very delighted with him. He was on the front of Horse Deals recently as one of the Irish Draught Superstars. My friend owns him and he is a very nicely tempered stallion and his foal is just the same.

We have decided what we are going to do we are going to use an ID but keep the foal in Ireland until he/she is broken cheaper option as on a farm you really dont notice one extra mouth to feed( that and I'm spoilt by my Uncle). In the meantime we are going to get a pony which will be Bronwyns and as I'm only 5' 1" I will still be able to ride it.
I am so glad I started lessons again but did I ache after my first lesson, its amazing how quickly you pick it up again.
We have started getting stuff for it already, Bronwyn has been doing extra jobs around the house to get money to pay for bits for her grooming kit everything is pink and purple.
Im really excited just have to be patient until the right pony comes along.
