hi. my daughters mini dachshund has just given birth to a stillborn little girl. there are definitely no more puppies . we are heartbroken. i have never known this to happen , and therefore wondered if anyone can advise us on what to do, as mum is heavy with milk, but with no pups to feed. she was looking for the puppy for a while after we removed it, but soon settled down when we gave her a chicken wing. will the milk just dry up naturally , or would we need to get something from the vet ?

How very sad my heart goes out to you, her milk will automatically dry up by itself give her plenty of exercise to help, the milk as you know is supply and demand, no demand and the milk will just re-absorb.

It might be worth taking her for a check up at the vet to make sure there are no other unborn deceased pups, I only say this with there being just the one pup born, it may be best to just get her checked over, even with a flat undercarriage it is possible for a pup perhaps not even fully mature to be there still. If she were mine I would have her fully checked.

So very sorry, for your daughter and of course the mother.

thanks Carrington, i cant stop crying for the little sweetheart, she is such a lovely little dog , and was such a wonderful mum to her 1st litter of 5 , when we realised the pup was dead, we left it with mum , for about 20 mins , hoping for a 2nd live pup to distract her , so we could remove the dead one. she was constantly licking & cleaning it, but the most heartbreaking thing was when she curled her body & pulled it into her trying to get it to feed . my daughter has rung the vet and she is taking her tomorrow for a check up.

So sorry to hear of the sad loss. Our mini wire's milk soon dried up without any intervention, we were advised just to gentle express a little milk a couple of times a day. As for depression, Holly was awful for about 2 weeks but is now back to her old self. Again we managed to avoid the medication but it was pitiful to see.

ive just been round to see her, she seems her usual happy self, she is digging in the bed , which is normal behavior after having pups. she is wanting lots of cuddles and attention, which we are happy to give ! there has been no loss apart fron a couple of slimy streaks. the vet feels that she probably absorbed any other pups , he has given a course on antibiotics, and is checking her again on friday. thankyou for all your kind words. Herbidax, im so glad Hollie is ok now, give her a big cuddle from me .
