Topic Dog Boards / General / Novelty dog show

I am organising a novelty dog show and thought I needed a licence. Rang the Kennel Club who sent me out a companion dog show pack.  After reading it thru, I rang the KC to query something and explained what I wanted to do. The lady I was speaking to said that I didnt need a licence as I was not judging any dogs to the breed standard, they are all prettiest bitch, handome dog etc. classes.  I cannot remember this lady's name but I was wondering if anyone else could confirm that I have these details correct.  I am at a meeting tomorrow where I understand that there could be some objection to my fun dog day and it was suggested that I had the lady's name who I spoke with at the KC.  WOuld anyone possibly know the name of the lady who runs the companion dog show dept.  I am sure it was her I spoke with.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You don't need to have it under KC rules if it's a fun dog show, only a companion show.

Although why not put on pedigre classes aswell and get a licence.  More likely to get more people to come and therefore make more money :)  Doesn't take any extra organsing really.

Popular companion shows can get pedigree classes of 15+ thats quite abit of extra money at £1 or even £1.50 a class :)

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I am very inexperienced at this and wanted to start small. If it was a success then maybe next yr look into a bigger event.  I was told that to have pedigree classes, therefore a licence you have to have "paperwork".  Also that if you are under KC rules you cannot have agility at the same event.

I am organising a Fun Day, with "have a go" at agility, obedience, novelty dog show, temptation alley, scent corner, plus raffle, guess the name of, guess how many etc.

So maybe next yr I will do the bigger "dog show" thing.

But thanks for your help anyway I do appreciate it.

Can't see whay you can't have "have ago agility"  I know at the companion show we used to organise there was have ago agility plus demo's, although someone else did organise that.

All you need is a licence and insurance :)

slight deviation here ...but does anyone know the reason WHY we need to have a KC licence ? after all non registered dogs can enter - placings count towards no KC recognised awards and it's all meant to be for fun and to raise money for charity ...anyone know why the KC need to be involved at all ?

To make sure the KC get extra money?

Seriously I don't acctually know, I'm guessing it might be because you are judging dogs to comformation and movement against the breed standard.

Now I'm sure someone like MM will be along soon with her knowledge of the red book, maybe she can tell us? :D

Also Yvonne, dont forget if a KC registerd club runs a companion show they can have upto 50% of the profits going into the clubs pockets with a minimum of 50% going to charity.

Hi, you would probably have spoken to Sylvie Lyus, or one of her collegues in the show dept.

It is to exclude top winning dogs for a start, if you have no licence there is nothing to stop someone entering a champion or CC winner & believe me there are pot hunters who would do this !

Plus if you apply for a KC licence you can insurance & licence for £20 !

I've been to companion shows with breed, obedience, and have-a-go agility - great fun! But yes, we get a licence for our full companion show, but not for the fun one in August which has novelty only. :-)

Thanks for all your replies.  I was told by the lady at the KC that we couldnt have agility if we had a full companion show and a KC licence.  It was also why at the Weimaraner Club's 50th Anniversary show we couldnt have agility going on at the same time as the show.  The KC wouldnt allow it.  Dont really understand why  bu there we go......
