We have a 8 month old puppy who absolutely adores fruit of any kind.  Is it
OK for him to eat fruit on a daily basis?  Are there any fruits, apart from grapes
which he should not have?

Fruit is really good for your pup.  I feed my dog BARF and part of that diet is pulped fruit and veg.  I use everything except grapes, or any exotic fruit, just because I don't know anything about it. No onions or leeks either!

If you put your fruit and veg through a juicer and give your pup all the pulp and the juice, he will be able to digest it better and absorb more of the vitamins than giving it to him whole!

I use chopped up apples and bananas for 'in house' training treats :)
They love 'em

...and bananas are great as pill poppers!

maria, why not leeks?  are they similar to onions in the effect they have on dogs?

My 2 bitches love fruit including pineapple!   My dog isn't interested at all.

Yes cheekychow,  I think leeks are part of the onion family so I don't feed them to my dog!

My dogs love fruit but be warned - too much can make some dogs a little loose in the pants

I too would use fruit as training treats if he loves them!!!

If I find something a puppy loves food or toy wise I would rather use it for training to get their attention.

Though my old boy loves to crunch a carrot now and again (though he also dug up and ate the leeks that where planted in a pot in the garden and pinches onions, never yet done him any harm although don't take any chances, all leeks and onions wether in the garden or house are kept out of his reach!

Apples for mine. My OH regularly shared an apple with Dakko on the way home from work. Apple for OH, core for dog!
- By Missie Date 15.06.07 21:59 UTC
oh? I don't give mine the core, I was told not to let them have the pips?
- By ali-t [gb] Date 15.06.07 22:01 UTC
I don't think there is enough arsenic in the pips to do any harm to dogs unless they are eating them in massive quantities.

Since Dakko lived to over 13 I don't think it did him any harm, and now OH eats the core too as he has no one to share his apple with as he wont let me get another lapphund pup :-( (I wonder if i should tell him about the arsenic - Naaahhh let him take his chances :D :D )

My dogs have never had a problem with pips in cores now and again...nor have they had problems eating (after stealing) onions or leaks, having the odd grape or peices of milk chocolate.....

I agree that dogs would need to eat alot of apple seeds on a regular basis to succumb to poisoning.
Apple seeds contain a cyanide compound called amygdalin (not arsenic), but keep in mind that those seeds are quite small.  Canine teeth are not designed to grind food, so most apple seeds are going to leave the mouth in one piece and pass out harmlessly in the poop.  The natural method of propagation for apple trees is through the stool of animals that eat apples, so the seed coat is designed to resist erosion by the digestive tract.

There is a story of  a woman who loved A. seeds so much that each time she had an apple she would save the seeds in a cup, once the cup was full she ate all the seeds at once and died..
