I visited an old churchyard with my mum at the weekend to see the grave of her great great grandparents. I was fascinated to find that they had a son who died age 26 (in 1895) who had a great love of singing and was a scholar. I would really like to trace the family tree but I'm not sure where to start. Have any of you attempted tracing your family tree and can anyone suggest a good internet site that I could register with ?

I did ours but as nearly all of our family come from scotland we went to register house in edinburgh and did some research there. Its now all online at Scotland's People. Not sure if the same applies to other parts of britain though. Be warned it is addictive (nearly as bad as champdogs), and it gets difficult when you have to go back to Parish records as they don't hold as much info in the same place as the modern (1830's on) records do. The mormons have a good genealogy site and family history.com has good info to get you started. Start with your living relatives though and get as much information as you can from them about when and where people were born, got married, died etc. Also remember that the spelling of surnames may be different in earlier records as spelling depended upon whoever wrote the record so names ending in ie might be y or ey in earlier records

Thanks also Dakkobear. This line of the family are from Denbighshire in N.Wales, mainly farming folk I think, and all called John or Ellen Williams it seems! The problem I will have  is that most of the graves and records are going to be in welsh, and my welsh is pretty rusty to say the least! Though I got the jist of what was on the gravestone at the W/E my father came to the rescue with a full translation.
I'm really excited to get started now!
