Blimey - does everyone make bread pudding like that? i've never heard of saoking the bread in water...and can't see where they used the butter in that recipe. I always butter slices of bread, cut into squares and put in a greased dished with raisins, sugar, mixed spice and milk

That's Bread and Butter Pudding which is an Egg custard on bread and buttter.

Bread pudding is that dark stuff sold insquares in bakeries made with left over bread and spices etc.

Thanks B, it must be an English thing :D  What you call Bread and butter pudding is just Bread pudding to us. I've never heard of this soaked in water, mashed with a fork stuff!

I soak the bread in milk not water.

I soak my stale bread in water overnight, but! to soak it quicker, use warm water,I squeese mine with my hands and tip excess water out.  then stir in mixed spice, nutmeg and a little ginger, add the dark brown sugar, a tiny sprinkle of shredded suet, mix well add an egg, (then sometimes a little brandy,) place in a well greased tin or pyrex dish, sprinkle some brown sugar on the top, cook untill firm, it will shrink from the sides. We like it cold. But is is nice warm with custard or cream or icecream. The secret is the more soaked it is, the more moist and nicer it is to eat. When you buy it from shops it is nasty and dry. Can't beat home made.

Nope, there's bread pudding for sale in Tesco's up here chaumsong.   You buy it in foil trays.  I hate bread & butter pudding, yuck, slops.....  But bread pudding, yummy.   And I can confidently say that being English living in Scotland!

If its for sale in Tesco it's for all you sassenachs that migrated up here - like M&S creamy porridge nonsense :D

We didn't really get bread pudding down south as it seems to be a northern favourite? The south seems to favour bread and butter pudding made with whole milk, butter and eggs, yummy. Then there's also blackberry and apple pie,the fruit picked in the morning by the kids and cooked in time for tea by gran. And treacle pudding made with stale breadcrumbs on a crispy pastry bottom that could be taken out into the garden and eaten like pizza while you sat in the sunshine on the swing. Fresh hedge fruit summer pudding and of course rhubarb, gooseberries and strawberry tarts with double cream, mmmmmt Thats it, I'm putting the oven on!

My Mum made the best Bread Pudding I ever had and she was from Buckinghamshire. 

There was usually slabs of bread pudding in the canteen at college in Salisbury. :)

I love Bread and Butter pudding, and mine is never sloppy, if it is then too much custard and not enough bread.

It's not sloppy at all It stands up in a bowl!

Y'know what - I just couldn't eat it bread & butter pudding, the look of it just puts me right off.   Sorry, I can imagine the consistency in my mouth............*shudders

What about custard tart, it should be as firm or firmer than that.

Omlette - I make sure is totally firm all the way through (Put it under the grill to cook off) & no to fried bread, not a big fried food fan, hate sloppy scrambled eggs too.

Custard tarts, nope never tried them & don't think I want too.    I like firm things!!!!  

Custard Tart should be firm. and I prefer my bread and butter pudding that way too, though I know some like it soft at the bottom, I like mine with a crunchy top by putting under the grill and caramelising the top.

Iceland do a lovely custard tart with Raspberries with caramelised top, definitely not soggy and very yummy.

Bread pudding is similar to fruit cake, all dark brown and fruity and spicy. Bread-and-butter pudding is much lighter (both in colour and texture) and fluffier - the underneath is almost pappy. Even Wikipedia says the two shouldn't be confused! :)

Bread pudding is a slab which could be put into a lunch box. It's rather stodgy (IMO), although quite eatable :D Proper bread and butter pudding is a culinary delight :) :) Especially if made with double cream :D :D

You're confusing bread pudding with bread-and-butter pudding! Totally different beasts! :D Bread pudding is often cut into slabs and served cold, like a slice of cake. Yummy!

I really love bread and butter pudding - made with fruit bread or sultana bread :D :D  and cream :D  if you're going to eat it it may as well be really nice and very light and fluffy :D

I've even made Gluten-free Bread and Butter pudding using GF fruit bread  MMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmm :)

Now you know I'm a modest sort, but I make the best bread and butter pud in the universe. Splash of vanilla extract in the custard, plenty of nutmeg and cinammon and must be left to soak for a good couple of hours before cooking or it doesn't all 'souffle' up properly.
