Our eldest girl, 14, is driving us mad with her insatiable appetite. No matter what she eats, when, quantity it is never enough. She is feed on Burns or Royal Canin and gets much more then the others. She has 4 shapes for breakfast, 2 before bed and a snack around 7pm which is normally 2 JWB crackerjacks. In between she will bark if we are eating and will attempt to pinch food from the plate or out of your hand.
She has now a habit of barking an hour before dinner time  and waking at 4 am barking for her breakfast.
She has been to the Vets and they have ruled out any medical problems like Diabetes etc
She went for her OAP check and we mentioned it again but they don't seem concerned.
She has lost weight over the last year or so in spite of the amount she eats. Tomorrow she is having mammary tumours removed and will ask again as there must be something wrong.

I think with oldies food becomes a bit of a focus and being old and a tad cranky they do tend to make demands more than they would have done before :D

I wouldn't worry and enjoy her whilst she is still happy and healthy ;)

Good luck with the tumour removal. Have they recently come up as my oldie Lab Min had them at about the same age. I must admit we decided not to get them removed as they were not causing her any discomfort and didn't see the need to put her through a GA at her age :)

What ever happens hope she remains happy and healthy for a long time to come :)

Ditto Lucy's comments :)  Similarly my old girl was erm, rather passionate about her food as she entered her twilight years and would have happily eaten until she burst had we let her :D  Lots of low cal snacks - raw veg to chew on such as a whole carrot - may take the obvious edge off and give her something to occupy her between meals!

Good luck with her op - hope all goes well!

best wishes, Teri

Yes, she too would eat till she burst!! We have given her too much to eat when I thought the OH had not fed her and vice versa and she gladly ate till she was sick. Dafty!
As for the tumour removal, we had one side done last year and said we would not put her through it again for the other side as she was happy, the biopsy  came back benign and didn't want to put her through another GA. However although they don't bother her they have grown dramatically over the last month and don't look good at all. She is still sprightly for her age so want to give her as good as possible life as we can so think it will be for the best

I would introduce her to marrow bones, knucklebones, anything big and chewable that is able to keep her occupied plus feed her at the same time.

The waking at 4am thing would send me to the nuthouse, thats around when i go to bed,LOL
