A query for those who know their show rules ...

I know some breed clubs have a puppy stakes class separate to the usual classification, with a different judge. Does anyone know whether any show can use this format and if special permission is required?

Special permissions are needed, you see them granted in the KC Gazette
Special Puppy Event is I think the term they use for the puppy stakes.

Most Boxer Clubs have them M :)

I don't understand the point of them if there are already puppy classes scheduled, except that they might cover both sexes??

I could see the point for example at joint dachs shows, or rough and smooth collie shows where they are scheduling technically more than one breed.

Is it because prize money can be offered?

It's been 3 years since my youngest was a puppy...
They normally have 6 classes at these 'special' events.
3 Age range classes in each dogs and bitches.
But we get the seperate classes for the dogs and bitches anyway.
We commonly only have the two puppy classes 6-9 Months (Minor Puppy), 9-12 Months (Puppy)
in the open show

They were normally at the beginning of the show before the open show.
So I used to use them as a practise before the open show proper.
Can't remember winning money but then that's not to say it didn't happen :)

I think they are a good idea if you want some practise at showing in breed level
and for your puppy to have two judges to go over them etc. So it's enough of an experience
for the younger puppies without over tireing them.

As Kirstine says, the idea really would be to open up the entry a bit by having a different judge for the stakes, and give exhibitors the chance to do a bit more with their puppies - I would assume they'd enter the stakes instead of a second standard breed class. They have been popular at the breed club shows I have seen them at (Dane shows).

As you say, we would also have Roughs and Smooths too, to add an extra dimension.

Just trying to have a think about ways we could change our classification to offer something 'different' to the exhibitors.
